Good Question, fairplay. I seem to remember that Union County included Fannin County at one time. I'm not sure when Union County was split. I'll research it. It could be that there wasn't a need for three commissioners at that time. Fairplay is referring to County Commissioners - JT Calwell, Larkin Lewis and Joseph Penland
I'll include more links to the old newspaper as I find them. Perhaps we will find a clue. It is also interesting that it was the office of County Commissioners. I think they (Commissioner) used to be called Ordinary at least that is how they referred to Marion Chambers, if I remember correctly.
Fairplay. Don't you think before you call them idiots, you should find out who they are. They could have been Republicans...Just an observation.

Was John T. Colwell a commissioner (ordinary) in 1902? I only found one reference to ordinary, but no office of commissioner. I'll need to research it more, but this implies that we went from a 3-commisioner board in circa 1889 to an Ordinary office in circa 1902. This is based on the theory that a commissioner was later called an ordinary. So, between 1898 and 1902 we changed to one commissioner or ordinary. Can anyone add information. I gotta get back to work. Ordinary, John T. Colwell 1902 www.ancestraldesigns.com/smarc/union_news_may1902.html

I didn't call the commissioners idiots. I called the ones who changed it away from multi commissioners idiots. By the way The last sole person(Ordinary) that ran the county as a republican before Harold Cook was Marion Chambers.

The first sole commissioner was Glen Gooch in 1984, Wayne Colwell was the last Ordinary.

Fairplay thanks for your information. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I would like to put together a list of ordinaries / commissioners as far back as we can go. According to the information below, Eugene Collins was ordinary before Nov. 1972. Neal Collins was elected in 1972. I'm thinking about setting up a Web site, portal to various links, and/or blog site on various aspects of our history in Union County. It will take a while to put together, because I need to make a living. For now, I would like to collect information in "OLD NEWS (THE BLAIRSVILLE HERALD)" section at blairsvillecity.com. If you want to contribute information here on Lamar Paris section, feel free. I just don't want to disrupt the flow of this forum. www.fastcase.com/Yahoo/Start.aspx?C=4afe7a540cdfca6b75482379246d5cfa491733ad31250df6&D=db07a42ccb852d13c09eeb482467419bbae2cbcf9fb5b94d&AffiliateConst=Yahoo

I understand a strong candidate in the county is testing the waters regarding the office of Commissioner. He said he would allow Union County decide if they wanted a five members board. He has my vote.

After reading a letter in the NGN this past week where someone complimented Mayor Jim Conely for cleaning up the trash in the city, I saw Lamar had several crews out in the county picking up garbage. Thanks Jim. You are a breath of fresh air in politics in this county.

The first sole commissioner was Glen Gooch in 1984, Wayne Colwell was the last Ordinary. What is the difference between an ordinary and a commissioner?

What is Lamar doing now at the golf course? They hauled dirt all last week for something. I heard he is building a complex which will house the chamber of commerce, the developmental authority and others. I thought in the paper a few weeks back he said he was thinking about it as a future project. If so this is why we need a 5 member board and a county administrator. I was told that only about 1% of the population of Union County actually uses Butternut, and yet us other 99% keep it up. With the private golf course going north of town, the one in Fannin County, Brasstown, the Ridges, and the new resort which is to come, is it feasable for Union County to continue holding on to the golf course?
