I think that in the 40's we start to realize we need to start doing for ourselves instead of everyone else.
I myself went from my parent's home (chores and responsibilities), to my first marriage (just graduated, looking for a job in a new city, then a couple of years later my first child), divorced and raising a child on my own working 3 jobs, then married again (2 children and a stepson and a husband with a job and other responsibilities).
SO I have spent most of my life doing for other people, parents, husbands and kids. At 40 I realized "Hey, you arent' getting any younger, so you need to take better care of yourself and enjoy life a little more. I don't want to be sitting in my rocker one day regretting the things I didn't do. I want to be the one telling all of the things I accomplished.
SO maybe at 40 we actually open our eyes and open our minds. Maybe we start to realize it's ok if we don't care what people think as long as we don't harm anyone and enjoy what we are doing. You can't plesae everyone, so you might as well please yourself.

Well, I don't think you really get "good sense" til your mid thirties!! The reason that I asked for everyone's age is because I am terrible at guessing ages!! I guess women get more sensitive about their age as they get older! My husband and I are 7 years apart in age!!

Just poking around in back pages and saw this - I am currently 43, for about 2 1/2 more weeks. 26 was the "hard" one for me because I suddenly realized I was closer to 30 than to 20! Had a horrible 26th birthday! But, I hit thirty going full speed ahead without a problem. Did the same thing at 40.
As far as learning, I've lived a lot of life in a short time it seems. I've been fortunate. I have been swimming in the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico. I have been to mountains and plains, deserts and beaches, and crossed the continental divide more times than I can count. I have lived in 7 states, from North to South, East to West. I have been in Canada and Mexico. I have been though the Gateway To The West Arch in St. Louis, the unbelievably beautiful Redwoods of northern California, the caves in Kentucky, and ridden a stagecoach in Dodge City.
I've been through earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. I have cooked in the most modern kitchens, outside camp fires and on a Red Mountain T woodstove. I have done my homework by kerosene lamp. I have worked in some fascinating jobs, met a lot of memorable people, and have more memories than I could ever tell.
I gave birth to perfectly healthy children who are now all grown and doing just fine. Yes, my first husband didn't quite work out, but I wound up with the best man that a woman could ever hope for. A man that shares my interest, loves me unconditionally, is affectionate, warm and caring. I live in my hometown, where old things are familiar and new things are exciting. I live within a couple hours drive of probably 5 generations of my ancestors. I have a wonderful family and I have roots, and I know understand what that means. Sure, there have been some major bumps and ruts in the road, and I'll probably hit alot more along the journey, but I can't really think of anything that I would change.
Well, all that and the fact that I weigh a bit less now than when I was in high school and, in a really twisted way, I LOVE seeing the once-miss-perfect-goody-two-shoes cheerleaders (that used to laugh and make fun of me), walking around in the grocery store in old sweat pants, with their gray hair, wrinkles and broad behinds! Mmuuuaaaahhaha!
