I don't think a sheriff should have to keep up with money and crime. Do they not have some pencil pushers that do that for the county?

I'm sorry but if that guy from FL gets in as sheriff then Ithink I'll need to leave town because this won't be my town anymore. Sorry if that sounds mean but it's just how I feel.

Bubba, Bubba, Bubba........... GCIC/NCIC is continually making changes in what we report and how we report it to both federal and state agencies. An believe it or not they play with the numbers to make them work for grant allocations, equipment, etc. Do you have any idea how much training the deputies get now? How does anyone thats not involved with the department? They have instructors, we have instructors, we train together, with other departments in our ATTEN Network and in other parts of the state. We are required to have 20 hours a year, every one has at least double. Most have triple that and more. We are required to qualify once a year. We do it twice. It cost money to certify a department......... a lot of it. The application fee alone is astronomical and its annual. I retired from a department that was nationally accredited our application fee alone was $60,000 plus the staff that kept us in compliance and the cost of soft ware and expense of records that have no place up here ............ yet. Maybe one day, but not now. An better money management........ now how the heck can you say that with a straight face when you have no idea what is gonna happen in a year. Natural disaster, big plane crash, the investigation of Meridith Emerson......... this stuff happens, and guess what Bubba............ you pay for it. You just suck it up and pay for it. You pay for medical expenses of prisioners, you pay to farm out prisoners, cause someone didn't build a jail that would be easily expanded. Some departments up here have looked at certification on the state level............. same thing, its expensive. Not as bad as Federal but still expensive. Gas to operate the patrol cars is up, ammo for qualifications is three times what it was last year. (They tell us its the war) It also takes 6 months to get. An you mentioned response time right? Calls are assigned by priority, they all are responded to. But common sense dictates that if your responding to a stolen bicycle and a crash with injuries comes in........... where do ya go? They do that in Atlanta too.

Bubba what public record reports? I just got through looking at his website........ its purdy, but IMHO just a lot of smoke that some computer guru did for him. I'll answer you about Harolds statement and Harold should know from his previous experience. The state won't come get those prisoners because they don't have space for them either. They have to go to the dianostic center in Jackson. Its full, from there they are entered into the system and as openings present themselves, they are transfered out. Now, what else you got?

Bubba, Colwell Detention Center is not a prison. Its a facility where probation violations are handled the usual time in there is 90/120 days. I still fail to see what you are talking about with the crime stats. They are obtained from where? Do you know?

I asked Mr. Jones about the crime statistics. Law enforcement agencies are required to report their crime statistics each month. He pulled that information from the GBI website. The Union County Sheriff’s Office has not been reporting their statistics. That is what he is trying to show. I asked the Sheriff about this at a Dem. meeting. He walked away from me without answering.

Anyone can pull up the same numbers Tom Jones did by going to the GBI stats page and putting Union County in for the county under yearly crime statistics and selecting the year you want. gbi.georgia.gov/00/article/0,2086,67862954_87981396_90656469,00.html

I fail to see any relavence at all. That is happening all over the state. They have changed reporting techiques at least three times in the last several years. We send ours in then three months later we are informed we never sent them. So much for the internet. Almost everything is transmitted via internet now.

Thats correct Bubba, sometimes they do. But they are like every other government agency you have to deal with nowaday..... if you get my drift.
Also why should he discuss those sort of issues with people? Nothing you can do about it, nothing he can do about it and you know it never is resolved........... look at the posting on here. Most of it is nitpicking, I can't speak for the sheriff, but he's not the first that chose to just avoid talking to people about issues they just want to start something over. Talk to him about something that concerns you or your family. The man is doing a dang good job, if you choose to say otherwise thats your business. But from what I ve seen of your posts in the past, you take issue with every thing and everybody......... why would anyone want to discuss anything with you? Cripes I don't know why I even bother.

An no apologies were offered if thats all ya got, ya need to dig deeper.
Why is that so important to you, I d rather they spend time investigating and clearing cases, which they do....... the jail is full and the paper reports the arrests. There is not space in the paper to cover the calls they respond to. The sheriff is a working sheriff, if you think you'd like a micro manager better vote for one.

I would like to have a Sheriff that actually manages and solves crimes all year. This Sheriff can only bust low level dealer just before an election. And since when is it not important to manage how our tax money is spent? And for the record, the Union County Sheriff’s Office under Scott Stephens has one of the lowest conviction rates in the state. That is public record. Our District Attorney hands are tied because the cases the Sheriff sends him are plagued with problems. Missing evidence, missing reports, search and seizure without probable cause and so on. The major majority of the cases are dropped by the District Attorney. The Sheriff spent over $185,000 in overtime last year. What fruits of our tax money do we have to show for it? If the Sheriff is doing such a great job, why then were their no pending cases last month awaiting trial? In the eight years Scott has been Sheriff, only one meth lab has been busted and that was by the GBI. Funny we have not read anything in the paper about the two patrol cars that were totaled in April. The one Deputy was not even wearing his seat belt and was on the cell phone while he was chasing someone for running a stop sign. Rolled his car three times in a ditch. The other Deputy slammed into the side of a lady while passing her in the rain in a no passing zone. Management is the issue. If the Sheriff is not responsible to manage the department, then who is? We have good officers but some of them are running lose. One of the Sheriff’s drug investigators has a MySpace bragging about he can do whatever he wants because he is a Deputy. If you don’t think it’s a problem, wait until your rights are a family members rights are trampled on and then we will see what you have to say. And I think the Sheriff should always answer your questions, we pay his salary.
