I can help with your computer woes. Got plenty of references. Will do a complete cleaning inside and out for a nominal fee.

That's not a bad idea Honey Bee. It can make a PC last longer without all that fur (dust bunnies) on the inside of a PC.
My day job keeps me pretty busy, but I have been know to fix a computer or two on the side. I have been known to make a computer run faster by getting rid of malware and viruses. I can give free advice, but you get what you pay for...LOL!
I can help small businesses set up computers and homeowners install software for the kids. I can wire networks or help you set up a secure and reliable wireless network. From time to time I may post information security tips.
I'm learning PHP if there are any web types here who are experienced with PHP, HTML, and backend software let me know. I dabble in Linux and shell scripting at work.
I also do some computer tutoring. I know Excel and other Microsoft applications. I'm good at hooking up electronics, VCR's, DVD's, etc. I also assemble computer tables and do general handyman electrical things from replacing switches to hanging ceiling fans. I also build garden ponds (nothing big yet), some out door furniture, and I do low voltage lighting. My dream is to have a garden room that is wired for Internet access, so I can do work on my laptop outside (until it rains of course).

Mine's about three years old. All I do is run scandisk, defrag, and do the disk cleanup once a week and keep the anti virus up to date. I haven't had any problems yet.

Shortcircuit. That's good PM, especially keeping up the antivirus. I'm just courious...what antivirus do you use? I use AVG and Avast free versions on my Windows PC's. I'm not sure AVG is free anymore. AVG Pro may be better, anyway. I've been thinking about getting a liscense to resell AVG to clients or I may go for Norton.
I also think it is a good idea to use a UPS here in the hills, rather than just use a surge protector. We seem to get a lot of brownouts in the Tri-State.
Does anyone use Google Talk? It seems to be one of the better voice and IM programs. The voice is nice and it doesn't drop packets are speed up and slow down like Yahoo. Does anyone use VoIP? Skype is pretty good.

Shortcircuit that's a good maintenance plan but Windows makes temp files of everything you open everytime you open it. Any pictures or pages with pictures is automatically y saved as a jpg or a jif.
If these items are cleaned out a regular basis then it will eventually slow down the computer.
Defrag is good to run if your computer shuts down before all of the files are closed. So is scandisk if you are having trouble with files.
Cleaning inside would be to diconnect the power from the wall, take the sides off and using a vac or a blower, dust the inside of the computer. Especially the CPU fan, if it get's coated with dust it will allow the nit to heat up and totally crash. THe power supply fan on the back of the computer can get dusty and slow down cooling and it will cost around $65.00 for a replacement fan.

kopycat, I use norton but I'm thinking of going to AVG pro. Norton makes my computer slower on startup and I've been told that AVG doesn't. All I've got is a surge protector but I rarely use programs that require me to save my work occasionally so flickering power isn't that big of a deal. I've never really had a need for voip since I have free long distance on my cell. You are right also HB, I still like to clear my cache and delete the cookies reqularly because I spend alot of time surfing the net and using more disc space for the temp files can slow the computer down also. You can change the amount of disc space that windows uses for temp files also, with windows XP go to "tools" and select "internet options" You'll see a section for temporary internet files, click on "settings" and you'll see a slider bar that you can adjust.

Shortcircuit, I saw you post about Wolf Creek Radio. For those who can listen on the Internet or AM, today is when John Bubba has his show.
John "Bubba Geek" Mullinix is on the air each and every Wednesday from 10am to 12noon to answer your computer and technology related questions. You can call your question in to him during that time at 423-496-9226, or fill out the questionnaire.

Norton by itself is ok, but Norton system works is a waste of time, money and computer speed. I do like AVG, have it at home and at work.

Did you get your laptop fixed? Here is where to start, it maybe a Little different on Xp, since I am on a 2000 pro PC, now...
One place to look is in Control Panel and sound settings:
Click the Sound and Multimedia in the Control Panel.
When the screen comes up, click on the volume button.
Make sure the volume slide is turned up and it is un-muted (unchecked).
Sometime ago I have downloaded updates and I had problems with the driver, I don't remember exactly what happened. When did the problem start?
