UPDATE: Fire in Young Harris Area By Michael Miracle Nov 9, 2007, 11:01
Email this article Printer friendly page Young Harris area blaze still active in Hog Creek near the top of the Mountain.
Human cause cited as the ingitor, though not of what nature.
Blue Ridge Ranger Alan Tolk fro the Blue Ridge Ranger District and Chattanooga National Forest says the fire has forced the closing of the Miller Trek Trail behind Brasstown Valley Resort. He also warns citizens to say clear of the area.
A re-con flight this morning allowed authorities to assess the advance of the fire, Tolk said, and lines continued to be drawn around the area.
The fire has spread, he said, though this was expected, as burning trees and leaves fall of the containment line.
No acreage was available at the time of this release.

We were up on Brasstown Bald yesterday and you could see and smell the smoke from there. The ranger said it was stated either by arson or a hunter. But the terain was so rough and ragged that you can hardly get to it.
They are using helicopters and such to fight it. But the wind and dry weather aren't helping.
He said it had been going for about 3 day's.

One of the Atlanta TV news said there were firefighters from out of state helping with it and that it was partially contained. I don't care where they are from, they are all heroes in my opinion.

Hopefully they get it under control soon, all those dry leaves and limbs will ignite at nothing. I can remember when the usfs did controlled burns to burn off all the undergrowth, now that there are so many new homes around it's not safe for them to do that anymore.

All it takes is a little spark to create a big problem. Hopefully it can be contained before any homes are threatened.

There's very little smoke now, so that means that it's either out or it's burning hotter.

I've heard it all now wiseman. I'm surprised that George Bush hasn't been blamed yet.

I just heard on WSB, channel 2, that they should have it contained by tomorrow.

Saw on tonight's channel 11 that appox 8,000 acres were burned. The news said they are doing mop up now, making sure they kill all the embers and potential reflares.

I think it was close to 800 acres burned. I had to put my jacket over my face tonight driving through Hiawassee. I'm glad they have it put out now.
