Have you ever noticed when any important subject, like the splost tax, comes up for discussion or opinions the NGNews always give their viewpoints on the editorial page over to the religious crowd. And I doubt very much if it is the religious crowd, I think the editor makes them up! Just another way to divert attention away from gouging the taxpayer.

I didn't realize we were supporting 2 schools bubba, both Union County School and Woody Gap School. I was focused on Union County and hadn't heard you guys complain about all the money spent at the woody gap school for a fine arts building and gym..etc.. My way of thinking is I don't have kids in either school but I have to keep them up either with the extra 1% tax or an increase on my property. I personally would rather the tourist pay 40% of the cost rather than me paying 100% of the cost. Just as you pointed out bubba, RESIDENTS will pay one way or the other for these projects we just have to vote on how and how much!

In fact, I've heard the Board was split on this vote. Ever thought of that pugs?? The project they want is NOT even needed, so why fall for it?? If you vote yes, you tell the Board you don't mind taxes so they'll keep on re-newing the tax as long as uninformed voters keep telling them to spend money. Also go to the splost thread and read it closely and check the links. This splost tax is only another money grab by the Board and Superintendent. If we already had a fine arts bldg and gym for Woody gap, there would be some other excuse to get the people to vote yes. All the counties have an addiction and it's called the peoples money for useless projects and wasteless spending. VOTE NO TO ANY NEW TAXES!!!!

Shortcircuit, I don't know what truth you seek. I just don't think the people are in any mood for higher taxes, SPLOST or property taxes. According to Lamar in April the current SPLOST sales tax ends in August of 2009 and all the SPLOST projects will be paid off in 2009. ] The quote about the splost by the commish is not in the April Q&A on the county website. As for the splost, the one being voted on in November is for the School system, not local government. I thought is was April...I couldn't find it in April either bubbahead. I got it from somewhere.... Q&A source: The Union county Website:Q. You had an article in last weeks paper about selling more bonds to pay for the courthouse and other SPLOST projects. How long will the county be paying on those bonds? A. These are short term bonds that coincide with the end of the 5 year SPLOST sales tax. This current SPLOST sales tax ends in August of 2009. So assuming that our sales tax receipts remain relatively stable, the bonds will be paid off in 2009, and all of the SPLOST projects will be debt free, including the courthouse addition.

So to all the sensitive and personal people I apologize!!!! and offer my personal apologies for future events!! But I wonder why sensitive and personal people discuss politics??

I can answer that one for you bubba. I live, work and pay taxes in Union County, where the people I love also live and work, my family, my friends and neighbors. I care about the mountains and those that have chosen to live here for the same reasons I have stayed here. I demand the best services for these people I love, a senior center, new schools, the best fire and police protection, Meeks park, walk our dogs or for our children to play without cost to us. Our children don't ask us for these things we provide their needs and wants out of love and a desire for the best for these children. I love the new court house, because it makes the few times each year I have to deal with local government faster and pleasanter for me. The new drivers license office is more convenient than driving to blue ridge, the health department has help a lot of my friends and neighbors thru the years that didn't have the money to see doctors. You guys can whine and cry all you want about Lamar, taxes, Norman Cooper and the free paper. But what is all this belly aching worth when all you ever do is point out the wrong doing without supplying the answer to meet these needs. Buying property for a growing community is smart, land is going up everyday. People are moving in (If you move here for love of the area and the people. If you want to be a part of the solution and not the problem... ;D Welcome ;D . If you moved here to change the people to make it like where you came from, Why did you leave if it was that great This thread should be used as a tool where opposite opinions are discussed in a non threatening manner everyone for or against local government should act like neighbors. State your opinion without being mean to someone that is curious why you feel the way you do whether for or against. Who knows which way the next election will go!

If you want to be a part of the solution and not the problem... ;D Welcome ;D . If you moved here to change the people to make it like where you came from, Why did you leave if it was that great I agree with everything that is left out of this quote. I disagree with the following;; 1-Pointing out the wrongs of government is a not only a right, but a duty. Failure to do so is the downfall of nations. As for the answer for our needs, get rid of the present commisar AND VOTE NO TO SPLOST. 2-buying property might be smart. Breaking or circumventing the law and taking away the vote of the people is not smart or right. Taking away the vote is what this argument is about, not the land, not the savings of money, but to hold a vote. The argument is about whether anyone, democrat, republican, independent, libertarian, or communist can break the laws to deprive citizens of the vote! 3-I didn't move here to change people but I will not stand by quietly and let any one man play King, or take away my right to a vote. You may give up that right, but not me. Nor will I let any group or the whole population of the county take that right from me. I moved here for many reasons, one of which I thought with everyone knowing everyone else then surely this must be a honest community. And for the most part, it is, but for the most part the locals seem to be scared of the county powers. I can only feel sorry for those who support crooks only because he's a local. That's not much to brag about. VOTE NO TO SPLOST-JUST ANOTHER MONEY GRAB!!!

Fair enough bubba, everyone gets to have an opinion. I'm just glad you agree with the most important parts of what I said, Now if everyone could present their opinions in a nice way we might all agree on some points or at the very least agree to disagree as neighbors when you treat people the way you want to be treated you sleep way better at night .
