I had an occasion to visit a friend at our newly remodeled multi- million dollar hospital this week. Upon entering the lobby there was an unmanned reception desk off to the left. Needing to know my friends' room number I waited for someone to return to the desk thinking that he/she had stepped away for a break. After several minutes (about five) had passed with no appearance I entered the Emergeny Admittance area off to the right. A young man asked "Can I help You"? I asked him "Is there anyone supposed to be at the outer desk"? His abrupt response was "What do you want"? Well, I thought that I had already asked what I wanted but apparantly he didn't like that question so I then told him that I needed a patients' room number. Then he asks "Are you a relation"? I said "no" and then someone else out of my sight asked for the patients name and when given promptly gave me a room number which was 3xx. I went back to the lobby entered the the elevator, door closed, I look for button marked 3. There is none marked 3. There is only G, 1, 2, GR, 1R, 2R. I then put on my glasses thinking that maybe I had missed some explanation as to all this, but found none. What the h--- is this? Then I punched G to open the door and exit what seemed to be the "twilight zone". Not wishing to deal with that same young man again, I started up the hall towards the cafeteria and ran into two women in hospital attire. I asked "how do I get to room 3xx"?
They both chuckled and said that they were headed that way and would show me. While walking with them, they explained that the 3-hundred numbered rooms were on the 2nd floor and that this confusion is an on going problem. Also I learned that those floor numbers ending with an R is for the rear door that actually open into the lab areas.
My point here is that all this needless stupidity causes not only confusion, wasted time and therefore money, but also may attribute to that aforementioned young mans attitude. Its worthy to note that a hospital is not exactly paradise for patients or their visitors. All are probably stressed out to begin with and this elevator situation only adds to it.
How difficult could it be to have installed buttons such as G, 2, 3 etc. Can you say "rocket science" or better yet "brain surgery"?
In fairness, I must say that otherwise this is a very nice looking and clean facility. Most have said that their care was excellent and this of course is the most important thing.
