Manape brought up something I would really like to know your opinion on... Why do we have to pay for the up keep on Poteet Creek Campground with our tax money (gravel, paving, utilities..on and on and on ) but we can't use the campground because it is set up as summer homes for the wealthier visitors that can afford the entire season, while everyday people can't afford to rent for the season , we get left out the TVA campgrounds in both Hayesville and Hiawassee are also the same way they look like hobo villages...I think the 2 week maximum stay should go back into effect as it was a few years ago then everyone can take their families camping each summer if the TVA wants our tax money...they should be fair with their lake!! What do you think?

I think you are asking questions that should be asked! Gather supporters and take "Lamar's" campground back from him. It's yours not his! Get you some help and kick him good

If my memory serves me right Union County took control of the campground from TVA when Harold was in office. He made the rules about keeping people from staying there for extensive lengths of time. He also did alot of maintenance and repairs on the property. Then along comes Liemar and nothing else has been done since, including enforcing the rules. Somebody should check and see if TVA had any restrictions or covenants on the property when it was transferred to the county, if it does then Mr. Tater Head will have to follow the rules!

Short C ; Are we talking about the same liemar ? The one I know only follows his rules . He ignores state and federal laws . He is smarter than anybody else so he makes and passes his own ORDINANCES ; because he knows what is best for Union county .

Guess we can't do anything to get our campground back. That is so unfortunate, a lot of the locals really miss the memories we have growing up and camping there in the summer, something our young people won't be able to do. I wish they would at least keep more than a few spots for weekly rentals Thanks for link shortcircuit.

My own personal opinion of Poteete Creek is it is one of the best kept secrets in the county. As far as Tax Payer's money paying anything for this camp ground? No, this is one of the ONLY money making parks that the county has. If you can check the income for Poteete Creek you will see that clearly. Meek's park, Senior Senior, & Golf Course is where your tax payer's money will go. Hopefully, TVA will see their way clear to let the county add more sites so our local residents can take advantage of the camp.

In personal opinion Poteete Creek has now been changed from a camping area for the people of Blairsville and has been converted to an RV park for those who can afford to keep their RV there all year and pay the rent. The people who actually live in Blairsville rarely ever get a spot to camp because there are already people who have reserved the spots. Not only for this year, but also next year and all that follow. On the other hand the beach that is there is in deplorable conditions. It is in great need of some new sand and a big make over. Please consider this is one of the few areas of entertainment for the Union County citizens.

georgiagirlathome: The county procured Poteete Creek from TVA as a campground. It is still a campground. You do have to call and make reservations. However, you are incorrect about the reservations. They are not carried over from year to year. But are done on a year's basis. Whomever calls first, get's the spot. Approximately 1/4 of the camp spots are rented on a daily, or weekly basis. If not for the seasonal's that the county has, the campground would have cost the tax payer's, however, it is a self sufficient identy and it is the only park in the county that makes the county money. The campground has no control over the water line, which is constantly changing, therefore, the beach shoreline will change. New sand is put there each season, and some during the season. Please check with the recreation department or the manager's at Poteete Creek. They are all nice people.

If the golf course is not making money, it should be. They should charge more and try to cut some of the expenses. If it is not making money the county should do something else with the property that would be beneficial and more useful for more citizens of the county.

Fact of the matter is Poteete Creek Campground belongs to the tax-payers. It is not a private campground.
I asked about the "seasonal rentals" and was told the same thing that rmreed posted, by the campground host.
If not for the seasonal campers the campground would lose money. HHHMMMM Look's like the "out of towners" have saved us from ourselves once again.

I know quite a few locals that go down there. I can't understand why though!! Just my personal opinion. I am an old school camper. Places like Poteet Creek, Vogel and others are for folks that not from here. I know people (locals that start calling early January 2nd to get the spots they want for the weeks they want them. I don't know what regulations there are if any. Looks like they could have a time limit. People go to a WMA they are so much nicer and fewer people.
Wolf Creek or a WMA is the place to camp. Wide open spaces, just the campers and varmits. ;D

Cooper Creek out at the end of mulkey gap is a wonderful camping area also with well stocked fishing and lots of 4 wheel and walking trails. Good on Poteets for making money but I prefer the quiet of the forrest.
