I happened to visit Tom Jones website and checked his news section earlier, and found that he has wrote a piece about Lamar Paris and his Q&A section in the newspaper. Here it is listed below.
Why is Commissioner Lamar Paris campaigning for the Sheriff?
Customarily, I would not take the time to comment on Lamar Paris’ comments in his Answer and Question segments in one of our local papers, but I must take exception to the last two issues.
On my web page under News, I wrote an opinion titled, ‘Scott Stephens needs more of your tax dollars’. In this opinion piece, I indicated that the Sheriff needs $2,000,000.00 dollars of your tax dollars for another jail expansion and $300,000.00 dollars to purchase new patrol cars. This money is to come from the S.P.L.O.S.T. tax, which is basically the county spending money that has not yet been collected.
Since I wrote this opinion on my web page, the County Commissioner has seen fit to respond for the Sheriff in his Question and Answer segments. A week ago, the Commissioner defended the Sheriff’s poor planning in reference to the last (48) bed jail expansion that the county tax payers paid for. The Sheriff now wants $2,000,000.00 for another jail expansion. Now, in the most recent issue of the Commissioner’s Q&A, he defends the Sheriff’s decision to purchase used, sometimes reconditioned wrecked patrol cars. He states: “The Sheriff has worked with us to trim cost by purchasing some used patrol vehicles each year”. Mr. Paris, here is my response to your statement and my pledge to the citizens of Union County and the employees of the Union County Sheriff’s Office:
As Sheriff,
I will NEVER risk the safety of our Deputies and citizens for the sake of; in your words,
“To trim cost”.
*
The Sheriffs’ policy of purchasing used, sometimes wrecked patrol cars is a huge management mistake and highlights one of many problems at the Sheriff’s Office. If elected Sheriff, I will not allow this practice to continue. Used patrol cars are a liability time bomb waiting to explode. This practice puts our officers and citizens at risk.
As Sheriff, I will base all of my decisions for the Sheriff’s Office on the needs of the citizens and the safety of our officers. I will not allow officer safety to be put in jeopardy for the sake of political gain. I offer sound management and a dedication to the citizens, to do the best job possible. The Sheriff works for and answers to the citizens of the county; no one else.
I would ask the Sheriff to debate me directly if he takes issue with any of my statements or positions.
I will make myself available for a debate, anytime.
