Yep book sense is good but common sense and logic will get you a lot farther.

You mean a large shawl or just something small to throw on the couch to waller up in?
The ones I make are just single or double crochet until it looks long enough and I have several books with patterns.

I got a small wire bound crocheting book that helps with what stitch you use and how many to add to a row and the end before you turn and go back.
The one I am working on is just 2 skiens at the same time for thickness and a Q hook.
Homespun is so nice to work with, I have made several boogins with it.
If I don't sell some this weekend I will have plenty to donate this year for Christmas.

Finally finished the one afghan, started the next but didn't care for it, so tore it out. Will probably do a mile a minute. If I get it done for Christmas it will be another gift, otherwise I will save it for her birthday.

I found another old pattern that uses an "N" hook and 2 strands, so I am using that pattern. Worked on it a few hours last night and already have over a foot done! Won't take long at this rate!

This could be under the GRRRR topic, too.... I dropped a stitch 5 rows back and have to pull it out. When I realized it last night, I just put it down and said I'd deal with it later. Good thing this one won't take too long to begin with!

I screwed up on one for hubby several times, thought I had fixed it but when I had finished it looked like a tri-angle. I keep it as a reminder to double check rows.
I hate pulling yarn out and starting over.
Working on some counted cross stitch and embroidering pillowcases for gifts this year.

I haven't tried them... I was looking at the knitting machines Joann's has in stock... anyone ever try them? Most of reviews say they are great but take a little time to figure out. A few people gave up an returned them. Wouldn't it be great to make an afghan in a couple days?!

I finally finished my couch throw I started back before June. It was suppose to be a wedding present but will be a Christmas one instead.
Made a hat this weekend with my knitting loom and worked on a scarf to use up some scrap yarn.
Haven't tried the lighted hooks, I think one with a white light in the tip would be good to help me locate stitches.
I purchased one of the kid machines for lilred one time and it did good when it worked. I have looked at a knitting machine and pondered on it but figured it would be like my crochet, I could only use it when I got brief moments of time.
