It's not just "new" construction. If you are adding a carport, the inspectors are going to come look at it. I don't see how anyone could or should object to inspections.

I think it's a good idea, it's been my experience that some people who claim to be expert builders are not exactly experts. I think that the local inspectors are fair and honest and I pray that they stay that way so that all builders will be treated equally and fair. And yes, I know that Lamar is the person who started the inspections and I'll give him credit for doing that.

If I own property and I build an out building on my property, then it's no ones business how it's built, if it's for my perosnal use.
That's crossing the line.

I agree with h.b. ; I think of the measure as more control over what you are allowed to do . Where will the control and fees stop ?

Do you have to get a permit to build an outbuilding?

You have to get a permit for just about everything anymore!

That is true. The cost of the permits have gone up too. They are based on the size of the house you are going to build.

Soon, all the builders will be licensed and should be building according to code.

The only problem I can see with the inspections is that they are not looking for the structual problems in new construction.

Do you think we will have to get a permit for a chicken house or dog house? Have they put anything in the paper explaining what this permit will be needed for???

Are the inspectors looking for structural problems? I seem to have heard about one of the basement on one of the Summit houses. The concrete poured wall were too thin and didn't meet standards. Even if I wanted one of those gaudy houses, I wouldn't want the foundation to crack. I would want my investment protected. They have to pay big bucks for them.
One of the people, built a swiming pool up there on the side of the mountain, the walls collapsed and the water poured off the side of the mountain. I guess it wouldn't come under inspection code, but it would have been nice to know if the d**n was going to break.

They do, do a concrete inspection/ But they do not do a framing inspection, so the walls, floor and roof can be far out of level. I had not heard about the swimming pool walls collapsing.

I rode up to the Summit. Manape, are you talking about the pool that set for almost two years untouched? Have you seen it lately? I have no clue which house you referred too as being built on thin walls. I did see some porches that were a bit weathered but I believe maintaining them would have prevented that. The one I saw looked empty and untouched for more than a few months.
If a house sits untouched due to money issues or not maintaining them, they will suffer. Have you ever seen a rental sit untouched for a year with no maintenance or a unfinished house sit for more than 6 months unfinished? If not, I would NOT try it to even get hands on knowledge of how fast one can go down hill.
If a pool sits without being filled or finished and without the proper silt fencing, mud will wash in making it look devastating. IF it is the same pool that I seen, I would check back on your stats.. if not.. I do feel sorry and hope that the concrete people made it right.. are they affiliated with the accused wall that you speak of?
It is sad that anyone would be thrown off on. I take it with a grain of salt specially being thrown off on by another builder or someone who is not educated or has not had hands on building experience for themselves. When problems arise, it is usually not ever because ill intentions.

I would check with the county inspectors about what they do check on before believing anyone who is not an inspector and speaking on behalf of the inspectors. That is one thing I will not do but encourage people who question to do for themselves. They most likely will not get on here but if they do, I would assume they will be forth coming in stating their full names and job label.. otherwise, I would advise and urge people to call before assuming anyone or anything stated as being a fact. Even if I say something, I would rather you get your own personal opinion for yourself! Personally.. I didnt and have not seen what is being referred to at the Summit.. but I wont say it didnt happen because what claims have been made, just may have been resolved and me not ever know any difference. I wont say that the inspectors dont do a thorough job on inspecting all phases of a house.. because I have seen them not just on one house but a few now be extra thorough and inspect every portion to the codes. I think they are doing their jobs as detailed in description and what the county wants. JMO
