Reflections

Last night I was sitting on my porch step scratching my fat dog's pregnant belly and talking to her while she was finishing up some biscuits and gravy we had for dinner. The sky was just getting dark and the stars hadn't come out yet. It was quiet. (how much more country could you get than that?)

I thought to myself, you know 26 years ago when I graduated from UCHS, this was never in my plans. I was going to move to the big city and get a good job, a big house and live happily ever after.

I didn't get all of it, just so far the happily ever after.

I never dreamed I would have guinea's and enjoy listening to them holler when something scoots across the yard or have fresh eggs to gather from my own chickens I raised from babies.

We never had that growing up.

I never even imagined having a bee around much less a 100 hives and walking right into them and working with them

We never had that growing up.

I never dreamed I would enjoy canning and providing fresh foods for my family.

We had ton's of that growing up and I didn't like it.

Or hanging sheets and towels out on a clothesline and enjoying the fresh outdoor smell they have when they are unfolded from the closet and being used.

We hung out a lot of clothes growing up and I didn't like it.

Learning more about herbs and making homemade soaps.

Never exposed to that growing up.

Reading history and wanting to learn more about the past.

Had it in school and it was boring.

Nothing works out like we plan, but I have got it really good.

So how many of you have actually acheived your high school dreams?

I sure didn't acheive mine. I love animals and when I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a veternarian, but when I got in high school and found out I would have to go to college for 8 years....that sure changed my mind. Also I didn't have the good grades in math that you need to be a doctor. I am very happy and content with my life and job!

I actually ended up with my "dream job" and after a couple years I realized it wasn't so dreamy so I walked away from it. I'm not getting rich doing what I'm doing now but I am paying my bills and socking a few bucks away for the future, and most importantly I really enjoy my current job.

When I first started reading, the books I read were about electricity, science, math, and electronics. I would read science fiction, but not much else. I used to drive my mother crazy. Perhaps, it was because of my Jacobs latter experiments where I would make high voltage sparks go up and down wires connected to a high voltage transformer. I almost burned the house down a couple of times. Luckily, the fuses worked.

I like computers and lately that is how I have been earning some bread, but not enough here in the hills. I've always been technical.

Computers are my curse. It makes it difficult to converse with normal people. There are not many people who like to talk about TCP/IP Routing, protocols, Microsoft, subnet mask, and PHP. Their eyes seem to glaze over, just like your eyes are doing now.

I do have some social skills, but I'm 92.67% geek. My wife can tell you how impatient I can get. Some of you have seen it here. I do like forums, it gives me some contact with the outside world.

I tried teaching pre-algebra once. My daughter's advice to me was don't get impatient when they don't get it.

I have a difficult time dealing with people problems. If a computer has a problem, I want to fix it. I can tell you what is wrong with it in just two minutes. Then, I can turn it off, rip its innards out and replace it with a new one. It is difficult to do that with humans. You can't speak to them in binary, they ramble and ramble and I want to rip something out, but the police frown on that. I don't want to be in some jail cell with a burly man named Bubba. ;D

I am working on my social skills, though. I'm just glad my wife loves me enough to put up with me. I think she will keep me around, but for the life I can't see why the Maytag repair man is hanging around so much. I can fix any appliance around the house.

I am the same way when it comes to social skills.

If one appliance is broken, I can bet on one more being broken as soon as the broken one is replaced.

I have been very fortunate. My goals were simple. Get married, have children and live happily ever after. I married my childhood sweetheart and we have two wonderful children and God has blessed us and we are living happily ever after. We have had some real lean times, but we have survived mostly living on our love for each other. We never imagined the struggles that we would endure, but it has just made us stronger. Today, things are much easier than in the earlier years. We work for everything we have and live a honest life. After many years of marriage and being a mother I went to college with full support from my family. Our children are now grown and making lives for themselves. I always thought that we were living the happily ever after until now. Now we get to shower our grand daughter with love. That is HAPPILY EVER AFTER!
