According to the editor it is suppose to be a parody of the comments that are flying around about Obama and his wife.
The Muslim mis-truths and innuendos and such.
They are basically just making fun of the ignorance of people who speak before doing the research of what they are saying, instead of just repeating hearsay.

Regardless of what I think personally of Obama, and even if it was intended as "satire", it will only feed the very beast they are making fun of.
To me, the most offensive thing is not the fact that he is dressed as a Muslim, or that his wife is dressed as a terrorist, but the fact that they placed our Flag in the fireplace.
Very poor judgment and in bad taste.
And for the record, I don't care for Obama nor his wife.

Bee there was an article in the AJC today about the cover. Editors of New Yorker responded and stuck to their guns. They claim Americans have no idea who or what Obama and the wife are.

Obama says New Yorker insulted Muslim AmericansBy GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer Wed Jul 16, 1:03 AM ET CHICAGO - Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday that the New Yorker magazine's satirical cover depicting him and his wife as flag-burning, fist-bumping radicals doesn't bother him but that it was an insult to Muslim Americans. "You know, there are wonderful Muslim Americans all across the country who are doing wonderful things," the presidential candidate told CNN's Larry King. "And for this to be used as sort of an insult, or to raise suspicions about me, I think is unfortunate. And it's not what America's all about." Obama blamed himself for not being forceful enough in challenging some of the rumors about him, including that he is Muslim. Obama is Christian. The son of a Kenyan father, Obama lived in the largely Muslim nation of Indonesia as a child. He dealt with similar questions in February after a photo surfaced of him wearing traditional Kenyan clothing during a visit to Africa in 2006. The cover of the magazine, which hit newsstands Monday, depicts Obama in traditional Muslim clothing — sandals, robe and turban — while his wife, Michelle, has an assault rifle slung over one shoulder and is dressed in camouflage and combat boots with her hair in an Afro. A flag burns in a fireplace behind them as they bump fists, and a portrait of Osama bin Laden hangs above the mantel. New Yorker Editor David Remnick told the Huffington Post Web site the cover was chosen because it had something to say. When first asked about it on Sunday, Obama declined comment. His spokesman, Bill Burton, said it was "tasteless and offensive." Obama said he's developed "a pretty thick skin" running for president and has "seen and heard worse." "I do think that, you know, in attempting to satirize something, they probably fueled some misconceptions about me instead," he said. "But, you know, that was their editorial judgment. And as I said, ultimately, it's a cartoon, it's not where the American people are spending a lot of their time thinking about. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080716/ap_on_el_pr/obama_new_yorker;_ylt=AkJF7JdLkgAtUL2B1jRX2Hcb.3QA

They are good and bad among all societies, all religions, all colors. I have nothing against Muslims, I do despise terrorist. But terrorist come in all shapes, colors, sizes and religions. All doing their deeds in the name of their chosen god. We can't lump everyone together. On February 19th 1942 Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. Under the terms of the Order, some 120,000 people of Japanese descent living in the US were removed from their homes and placed in internment camps. The US justified their action by claiming that there was a danger of those of Japanese descent spying for the Japanese. However more than two thirds of those interned were American citizens and half of them were children. None had ever shown disloyalty to the nation. In some cases family members were separated and put in different camps. During the entire war only ten people were convicted of spying for Japan and these were all Caucasian. MLK: I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Obama did an excellent job with his speech to the NAACP, he didn't back down. Obama is under fire from black leaders because he is demanding personal responsibility from members of the black community. www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/44265.html

I see nothing satirical or funny about the cover, there is a degree of truth in it. Media darlings or not they are, at the least, racist socialists, at the most everything the cover depicts. A friend of Louis Farrakhan running for president? Please!!! Barry Blitt has a clear idea of who they are. Turn off the TV and think about it!!!!
