Thank you Teach for words well spoken. I initially ignored this thread because I felt the posters were not aware of what teachers go through each year. Now I can only speak for my system and the my teacher friends. I know bus drivers, paraprofessionals, custodians, clerical staff and lunchroom workers who have bought for children. Not just school supplies but gifts for their birthdays and Christmas.
The grass is always greener on the other side. Most do not know what great effort UC teachers put forth to help their students not only be successful, but to provide a warm and loving learning environment for their children. Unfortunately, whether it be the state or the parents teachers are to fault when expectations are not met.

I admire anyone with enough patience and professional pride to teach public school and who do it well, esp under the weight of modern bureaucratic burdens and exhaustive expectations.

Thanks WOM!!! I know the majority of our teachers on a personal level. While all systems may not be as fortunate, ours is very fortunate to have a groups of loving caring teachers who are dedicated to helping the children of our community better themselves so that they will have fuller and richer lives. While we may not love the constraints and impositions imposed on the learning process we love our students.

I have to agree with the person who started the topic. Paper, pens, pencils, basic necessities for education.

Actually, Babe, I did read the new rules posted by Admin. Are you calling my response a direct attack or what? I have a right to explain and defend my position, especially when someone calls me the "guilty dog." Where is the difference here; do you only feel this way when someone calls out you or your buddy? Also, there is nothing wrong about trying to provide a little information to the ignorant.

If the school children are not getting proper care, clothing or food at home shouldn't you report it to the proper officials?

IAMLEGEND--as teachers are "mandated reporters" of abuse, suspected neglect or abuse is reported to the school counselor, who then evaluates the situation and reports to DFACS if necessary; this is standard protocol. There are now groups (Family Connections) and people (Dana Stephens-Craig, School Social Worker) who are in place to assist low-income families with aquiring necessities such as clothing, school supplies, toiletries, etc. They can help some children, but they cannot assist all of them; remember our schools are Title 1, which means over 50% of the children there receive free or reduced lunches based on their family's income.

Thank you for clearing that up. I am aware that doctors and teachers both are suppose to report signs of abuse but wasn't sure of the gray areas.

What is wrong with the word "ignorant?" I think people have a really bad connotation of "ignorant." Ignorant basically means "not knowing." It's also....
1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: 2. lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact 3. uninformed; unaware. 4. due to or showing lack of knowledge or training
I am inside the school system and so are a couple of others on here, so we are not ignorant of the things that happen on a daily basis. According to the initial posts, the posters were indicating ignorance of how things truly are in the current system. Enlightening people is not a bad thing. I am not fighting, only trying to clarify how I KNOW things are, not how I 'think' they are.

I am ignorant in many things; bee keeping, combustible engines, and the stock market might top my list. We're all ignorant in more areas than we are educated.

Well,it depends on how we choose to use the word. Most people would say that the word in your post was meant as a rude comment.I'm not trying to fight either,I just want to try and help keep this forum from being a battle between people. It's ok to disagree with someone about their views but when it becomes an exchange of name calling, then it just makes this place worse.

Seriously? I have explained the comment in great depth, much more than necessary; if you still choose to call it "rude" and "name calling," then that is your choice. Sorry, but I do not resort to name-calling. I stated I was trying to provide a little information to the ignorant (those who are unaware of how things are regarding the given topic). Forums are places for discussing opinions and we all have our own; hopefully people can learn to think outside the box and try to understand where others are coming from, based on their experiences in life.

You stated your point,I stated mine.I think we understand each others view on this subject.I didn't post back to you to start anything,I simply stated how I felt about the use of that word and how most would view it(outside the box).No hard feelings on my side.
