Over in the school supplies -
Who was the wise one that figered we needed to start testin’ our young’uns and then comparin’em to ever body else’s young’uns? My gran’young’uns have told me all about their new testin’. The school says that these here test are real important. That they let them know where the young’uns is at, who needs help, who is doin’ real good, and how good the teachers is teachin’em. Hog wash! They set aside a week er two to prepare the young’uns, then another week fer the testin’ part. It takes a month er so to git yer young’uns score back. Then, the mamas and daddies have to go to the school so’s they can “discuss” what the scores mean. Seems like a bunch of wasted time to me.
What was wrong with the old way of takin’ test ever Friday and havin’ the teacher grade’em and give’em back to the young’uns on Monday? Remember when the teacher would sometimes give ya a “pop quiz” jest to see who had been payin’ attention? Seems like now days, they just want the young’uns to learn how to take test so they can be judged as good against other young‘uns in the world! Don’t they know they could take the time that they wasted on all this fancy testin’ and use that time to actually teach the young’uns somethin’?
Teachers now days jest don’t have to do things like they used to. They got computers and teachers aides and TV’s in the class room. They even got “teacher work days” to git some of their work done. I went to pick up one of my gran’young’uns from school the other day and I ‘bout got run over by a bunch of teachers tryin’ to make it out to the parkin’ lot. The bell had jest rung a minute er two before that, and they acted like they couldn’t git out of there fast enough!
Now, don’t get all riled up. I ain’t said that all teachers now days is bad. There are a lot of really dedicated men and women out there who really care about the young’uns and do their best to try and teach’em. As the sayin’ goes, my hat goes off to ya. Ya’ll are the builders of our future. The bad part is that sometimes, their hands is tied by the ones that make the rules. Some hot shot keeps makin’ new rules and stuff they gotta go by er else they’re out of a job. Why cain’t the hot shots jest let the teachers do what they’re bein’ paid fer and let’em be teachers? And while they’re at it, give’em the money they deserve fer doin’ all the stuff they do, like stayin’ after school to help a young’un get caught up, er bringin’ stuff that they bought outta their own pockets so’s the young’uns can make things.
But, to the teachers who ain’t this way, ya aught to be ashamed. Ones like you is why we got young’uns that graduate without knowin’ how to read and write and do math. Ya’ll are the reason so many young’uns jest give up and up and quit. Ya’ll are the ones that make young’uns feel bad about themselves, lose intrist, and feel like they won’t never amount to nothin’. Ya’ll aught to jest change jobs and do somethin’ besides mess up the young’uns!
Well, back to the testin’. Sorry about kinda losin’ it there, but some things jest plain make me mad! These test are now required by most schools now and for all ages of young’uns. Now tell me what good does some fancy test do fer a young’un in 1st er 2nd grade? Shoot, they ain’t even got used to bein’ away from home good yet, much less knowin’ about a silly test. And who’s to say that these test really show how smart a young’un is anyways? Maybe they learn differnt things in differnt places, er maybe they learn stuff from their mama and daddy that ain‘t taught in regler school, so the test ain‘t gonna be right no how.
What if the test says that a youngun’ ain’t up to par? Then what? And who decides what "par" is anyhow? Do ya blame the young’un er blame the teacher that was supposed to be teachin’im? Do ya make the young’un fail a grade? Do ya make’im go back to the same teacher he had er do ya give’em another one? Do ya tell the young’un he ain’t as smart as he aught to be? What if the young’un is smart in one area and not so smart in another? That don’t make him dumb, jest normal.
Ever body has strengths and weaknesses. Ever body cain’t be good at ever thing. It seems to me thats this is what these new test are tryin’ to do though. I still think the new ways of testin’ young’uns is a waste of time. It ain't doin' nothin' but takin' away real teachin’ time and not even close to considerin’ the true smarts of our young’uns. All of our young’uns deserve better than this. Think about it.

Kids aren't learning what they used to because many states base everything on state testing. Florida has the FCAT's and part of every class every day is learning how to take the test. That means that if you don't understand something you better ask someone for help, make an appointment with the teacher for before/after school help, or get a tutor, cause you will not be able to go over it again in class the next day. There is no time to review or go over something you didn't quite understand. Lil2c still struggles to tell time because even in elementary school they took the FCAT and there was no time to go back and review it. Lil2c is pretty darn smart, so if she had trouble, how many others do too?Who was the wise one that figered we needed to start testin’ our young’uns and then comparin’em to ever body else’s young’uns?
