From Normie-poos site: The Union County School Board members, during a special called school board meeting Thursday night, agreed to roll back the millage rate to 8.898 and accepted the resignation of long-time school superintendent Tommy Stephens. Stephens has been considering retirement for quite some time, stated a letter read by Chairman Jerry Dyer from Stephens to the board members. "[... due to the unfounded and untrue gossip and rumors infiltrating the schools and community regarding myself I feel it is in the best interest of our students that I step down from my position as Superintendent." The resignation is effective August 1. How interesting! I like how Norm just throws it in as a little add-on to the millage rate stuff. But for those of you curious about what those rumors about Mr. Stephens are, here is what someone posted on the Towns County forum. Here's the link, just scroll down to the bottom of the page, to a post by "windbag" (4th from the bottom). www.topix.com/forum/city/hiawassee-ga/T87NJM6OLQOEAJC42/p3Omikkron

I supported Tommy most of the time, regardless of whether or not the rumors are true I think he did the best thing for the school system by resigning.

Ahhhhhhh! I remember that, lol! Since the UC school system may be looking at a pretty hefty lawsuit for sexual harrassment, I would hope they would not even consider him. However, you never know what will happen next.

Since the superintendent is appointed by the school board lets see if they find a qualified replacement for Tommie. He/She should have at least a doctorate degree in education and administration and certainly tons of experience. The salary alone should be able to attract a superior person. The environment of this mountain community and the friendly people will be a big plus. But you know what, I don't have any confidence they will look for anyone of that caliber. You guys are probably right they will take a chance on Mr.R and pray that he won't pull something else perverted for our children to witness. They owe him. After all he is married to the daughter of the famous Odom who reigned over our schools for years and was a constant embarrassment to the citizens of Union. Does broken arms of parents, arresting parents because they ate lunch with their son and we made the national news. How about having to be carried out of the gym because he was pased out drunk. Odom son sits on the school board and who do you think he is going to recommend? The school board has the opportunity to find someone we can be proud of and would be a huge benefit to our school system. I will believe it when I see it happen!

Hopefully the new superintendent will be someone who won't give a job to every member of his family. There are a couple of people involved in the school system who would be excellent replacements but I think it would probably be best if someone new is brought in who has no ties to the UC school system.
