This is a subject for all you geniuses. How did the hospital go from being owned by the people of Union County, where it was limited in profit, to where it is now a coperation? My understanding is that the county had to have a referendum and the people had to make that decision. I don't think that ever happened. Under a corporation they the officers can pay big perks (Which they do) Might pay to find this out.

I was told that they were now a part of Northeast Ga Medical Center but I don't know if that's true or not. I do know that before as long as people would pay a few bucks a month on their hospital bill they wouldn't bother you, but now they turn you over to collections after a short period of time.

I know that to be true. If you don't have insurance they suggest you apply for MEDICAID, like that's going to help with the current bill. They offer no help, then send you to collections. Bet if my name wasn't so "anglo" there wouldn't be the same problem....

Just to give you a little insight as I have a few years of experience in the billing side of a hospital, but not Union. If you do get mcaid, yes it will cover the current bill it goes back and covers the last year. So if that helps luckyme, it would help with your current bill and then some. The reason I left the medical field is it has became to much of a business (they have no problems telling yo that), I could not stand it any more. Those people talking to you, collecting your money, telling you how much money you have to pay, yes they make comission on that, but most of them HATE telling you that you have to pay 3k out of pocket before your child can have the operation that he/she needs. The people you deal with you face to face have no control of if you have to pay it or not or if you go to collections or not that all goes through the business office. I was over the girls that collected the money at registration, I was the one that called you ahead of time and told you what you owed, but I personally worked behind the scenes b/c given the chance many patients would love to cuss me. I hated, I mean hated my job, it was a tough job and many times I hung up the phone with tears down my face b/c of the TRUE sad sob stories I heard. I counted my blessings, I prayed for those people, I walked away from that field and do not want to go back. If you send $5 a month every month on your bill they can NOT send yo to collections, if you do not pay your estimated share out of pocket they can refuse service if it is not a life threatening emergency.

Thanks blessed! I'll give it a try and let you know how I make out. I can't imagine going after people for money when they've probably just had a really bad time.

luckyme if this is about you and they are offering to help you get it, that is great. If they say they will try and help they will because if you have mcaid they will get payment. It is in their best interest to help you. I would call up there and ask you you can talk to about getting help with charity or mcaid (assuming Union has a charity program). Surely Union has somebody in social services.

blessed, I'm not so sure any of them know what's the proper thing to do, or they are passing me off in order to buy them time to send me to collections. Called the dcsandwhatever, they said you have to come in a fill out an app, but would be turned down until you go through social secutity....?? WHAT, in any event, that's in Blue Ridge, went there only to find there hours are Mon-Thurs 9-3 and closed on Fridays. We got there about 3:25 on Thursday, go figure. If I could get a job with them, WOW, that would be great!! Went on a site for GA medicaid and I don't fit any of the criterion let alone any thing from ss. I think this whole experience will be very frustrating, and I may have to enlighten some people ... for make me spend money I DO NOT HAVE, to go to agencies who won't help me.....I really don't think they want to see me in person....always a smile, but always my mind speaking!! I think I'm just going to go into the hospital, cash, in hand and say this is what I have... how can you get something from nothing? and believe me I DO NOT have anywhere near the money they want for the 3 hours I spent with them. Thanks for letting me vent, just don't what is the best thing to do at this point....

luckyme I am sorry and sending you on a roller coaster is not acceptable. Do not go anywhere else, I would write a letter and tell them everything that happened and explain the situation. Really look over it, although you emotions are high be professional about it. I know a lot about Fannin, but little about Union.
I am leaving for awhile, I will catch uo when I get back.

It has no members and is overseen by a Board of Directors.. No profit is allowed and only Hospital business expenses by Board Directors are allowed. DIFFERENT than the Union County Governmental Finance Corporation in that it has no members. The member of the Governmental Finance Corporation is the sitting commissioner. The Hospital Corporation has NO members. Becky Dyer is the Administrator and runs the Hospital under the direction of the Board.

so what exactly does that mean? They are seemingly very quick to go to collections, and do nothing in the way of trying to help people out, I was told best of the luck to you, then got a lettter that said the next step is collections, is that there idea of luck??

I don't have an answer for you lucky-The Hospital is supposed to provide indigent care (emergency care) for those who don't have anything, i.e., money, property, jobs, etc. For those who have jobs, money, property, etc., they are expected to pay. Most Hospitals will accept small monthly payments for care given. If you don't have it, all they can do is garnish your wages if you have a job or foreclose on property you might own. (all this pertains to emergency care) If you don't need emergency care they are not obligated to provide service.
