Looks like we have been boxed into a corner again and guess what? Ole Liemar is going to win again and he will say “It wasn’t my fault”
Talked to an official from Walmart down in Orlando at a meeting about the possibility of Walmart selling alcohol when the store opens.
Quite interesting what he had to say.
He said, “ I am not familiar with that particular store but we never worry about it. If we can’t get a alcohol license from the local government, we go ahead and open the store without it. After we are established for a while, our legal team files a law suit under ‘Restraint of Trade’ statutes. We seldom lose because of several reasons. The law is on our side and juries are sympathetic to anyone regulating a business when that business is losing money because of those regulations. Walmart has, and will spend a lot of money on the legal process to gain those permits.”
He asked why are you worried about it? Without waiting for an answer, he went on to say “All local governments are advised of our policy anyway and if they baulk at the selling of alcohol we can renege on building the store. In either case the permitting agency is informed of our policies. The only time we have trouble is when the local government has a contract drawn stipulating no alcohol as part of the deal.” One of the things that usually happens after we gain our permits is all the local businesses see their opportunity and they also file suits. It doesn’t bother my conscience because a community that backward is living in the past and needs to catch up to the times.”
Can’t you see the headlines now in the NGN, “Walmart threatens suit”
and the next week, “Lamar has to capitulate” and underneath
“Move saves taxpayer thousands of dollars, ”and in his questions and answers, goes on to bull the public that he had no idea this was going to happen.
Naw, he wouldn’t be that devious.
