For this list of the best email apps, we only considered email clients, leaving out email services and email assistant apps. An email client is a piece of software you install on your computer or mobile device to access email, even if that email is hosted by another service. An example is the Mail app that comes pre-installed on iOS devices. By way of the Mail app, you can access a Gmail account and a Yahoo Mail account. Gmail and Yahoo Mail in this case would be email services, which we did not consider for this list of the best email apps. Client apps almost always let you access multiple email accounts, giving you the option to see all your messages in one consolidate view.
For IMAP accounts, be sure to download the attachments first — attachments are deleted from the mail server and can’t be retrieved.

Microsoft Outlook 2002 (XP)/2003 This is pretty amazing, because desktop mail apps have traditionally been some of the most cumbersome pieces of consumer productivity software. This is in part because we all have so much email, and the protocol we use to send and receive it is so ancient. Mail for Mac, for example, not only loads messages slowly but also chooses to store gigabyte after gigabyte of cached email. So, Mailbox for Mac, like Mailbox for iPhone and Android, doesn’t actually load your "emails." It loads tiny snippets of text copied from your email messages. This leaves the bulk of email — layer upon layer of indented, embedded replies, a digital onion that will make you cry — on Google’s or Apple’s server (Mailbox still only works with Gmail and iCloud, for now). Transmission One of the things about my use of email that is most surprising is that I’ve gone in the reverse with how technology has moved. In the early days of e-mail usage, I preferred using web-based mail, but as time went on, I preferred app based email. Part of that is that I am bringing in multiple accounts into one app (personal iCloud and multiple G-Suite accounts), but another aspect is that I prefer native apps. I think a lot of it has to do with iOS where native apps are the default. On the desktop, we’re moving everything to the web. In this way, you can save time before downloading bandwidth-heavy messages and, of course, avoid malicious mail much more efficiently. It is possible to retrieve either a list of messages or a summary of just the most recent ones. If you detect anything malicious or spam-related, Mailbox Manager gives the option to delete them at once. The concept of Mail Manager is all very well but if you have a decent spam filter, and are working on a broadband connection, it's use is rather limited. New Toolbar Icons April 30, 2009
