BEIJING — China's food and drug agency announced stricter rules Wednesday for approving new drugs, a day after its former head was executed for accepting bribes to approve untested medicine. The government also ordered small, loosely regulated food producers to clean up their act.
Amid such concerns, the execution of Zheng Xiaoyu, who headed the State Food and Drug Administration from 1997 to 2005, was the strongest indication yet of Beijing's determination to improve product safety.
In a commentary, the Communist Party's mouthpiece People's Daily newspaper said Zheng's execution was warranted because of the serious consequences of approving untested medicine in return for millions of dollars in cash and gifts.
"He damaged the interests of the country and the people to a large extent," the newspaper said.
Bogus drugs approved by Zheng included an antibiotic blamed in the deaths of at least 10 people.
I LIKE IT, NO LONG JAIL SENTENCES AND UNPAID FINES. No book deals or tv interviews. Making the person responsible for their actions. Guaranteed to be a deterrent for other's who are also greedy. Would make a wonderful USA policy!!!!

Wow, those commies take care of business in a hurry don't they! Seriously though, the doctor took bribes to allow those drugs on the market and people died because of it. The death penalty is not too harsh of a punishment in my opinion.

That's why so many Chinese people want to come to America and live in California. You couldn't get your self executed there if you wanted to.
