From WALB.com News in Valdosta. If you pull up the link video is included: walb.com/Valdosta - Two men are arrested in Valdosta; police say they were attempting to fly drugs across two states. Investigators say 30-year-old Derek Stephens and his passenger 28-year-old William Nichols chartered a Cessna plane from their home in Blairsville. They were flying back from Sarasota but had to make an unexpected stop in Valdosta around 4:30 Monday morning. "The pilot made attempts to fuel the aircraft here, and he also told us that he landed here in Valdosta because he underestimated how much fuel he needed for the flight," says Commander Brian Childress of the Valdosta Police. They landed with their running lights off, drawing attention from an airport employee. "He realized there was something that just wasn't right with this plane and the two people on board, and that's when he called the police," says Airport Director Bob Hollway. Police arrived, searched the plane and seized two handguns, some cash and nearly 10 thousand dollars worth of marijuana." Stephens and Nichols are both being charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell. But more charges could be pending. "We have contacted federal authorities, and now we are trying to ascertain if there are any other violation these two many face federally," Childress says. And now over five pounds of marijuana are off Georgia streets.

If 2 people are in a plane and they are caught with two handguns, some cash and nearly 10 thousand dollars worth of marijuana, I think it would be safe to say they are guilty of something. Regardless of who it belongs to or who rented the plane.

I hope the Lamar people don't start on this being the superintendent's son. You can raise your kid's the best you can but after 18 all you can do is hope for the best.
I like Tommy Stephens

I didn't know there was a charter service available at the Blairsville Airport? I don't agree with Tommy on alot of things (one of which is giving his own children jobs within the school system) but blaming him for his son being stupid would be wrong. The kid always had everything that he wanted growing up, I just don't understand why he would throw it all away. Tommy and the school board are doing random drug testing for students, why don't they do the same for employees of the school system?

Shortcircuit: "The kid always had everything that he wanted growing up, I just don't understand why he would throw it all away."
Maybe that's the problem. Guys like him, like Brent West, and like plenty of others who are never arrested are used to doing what they want and getting away with it, because they live in a small town where their daddys are big people.
They get in trouble, daddy makes it go away. When they are kids its easier, theyre usually just doing stupid stuff. The problem is, when they reach adulthood, and still have never had to make their own way or answer for stuff they have done, they feel like they can get away with anything.
Where does Derek Stephens work? For daddy in the school system.
Where does Brent West work? For daddy at the printing business.
They stay under daddys wing and think he can protect them no matter what.
Its still the kids responsibility to do the right thing and Im not saying the parents are responsible, but they are usually a big part of the problem.
