First let me say that all of these will air again on Saturday and Sunday night on CNN starting at 9:00. Here is a link to a brief synopsis of each episode and some articles
www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/gods.warriors/
I watched the Christian part of the 3 part series last night and was so intrigued I took notes. Let me tell you, I was more alarmed at what I heard in the first 30 minutes than with the Muslim portion. Talk about wolves in sheep’s clothing, of course it got better as the show progressed. I really think that believers and non-believers alike should watch this series, it will cause you to raise a lot of questions and also show some more of the religious type arenas. They are all Christians and basically follow the same theories but they all have a different way of going about it.
Reverend Jerry Falwell
The first interview of course was with the Reverend Jerry Falwell, before he passed. Now of course he was his usual charming self, as most TV evangelist are and I can’t find much fault with his views, just some. They showed Liberty College and I wouldn’t mind one bit if lilred could go there. He was pleased that they graduated their first class of lawyers from Liberty College; it was something he wanted to achieve before he passed. I don’t think there is a bit wrong with a lawyer having some good moral values, keeps them honest. It didn’t seem to be a pushy religion type place and they were required to take a religious studies class, but the over all attitude of the place was a good one. They had separate dorms for men and women and some other common sense rules.
What alarmed me was the interview with the guy that is taking over the position of the good reverend. Reverend Falwell referred to his students as Pit Bulls, which is OK. Now this fellow, I can’t remember his name, stated that they are slowly working to take over the government, starting with the Supreme Court. Those are my words not his. They already have Samuel Alito and the judge that President Bush put into place. He stated that 2 of the Supreme Court justices were getting on up there one is 70+ years and the other is 80+ years and all they had to do was get two more of “their” people into that position and things would change. Abortion would be illegal and religion would be put back into school. It may me ponder two questions; #1 whose religion will be put back into the schools and #2 do they really believe that outlawing abortion will stop it? Now these are very intelligent and well educated people and I was really surprised at some of the things that they were stating.
The documentary showed how the Moral majority was started by Jerry Falwell after the Roe vs Wade decision and how they were going to protest and put a stop to it. It also showed how religion and politics are meshing and religion is slowly taking over politics so that they can do it their way. This is what I got from it; the Christian right is no better than the terrorist from overseas trying to force their religious beliefs onto everyone through political power.
Jimmy Carter & New Baptist Covenant
Then they interviewed Jimmy Carter, I like him. He explained why he broke away from the Southern Baptist and why he is trying to get religion back to where it’s supposed to be. He explained that at the 2002 (?) convention they wanted everyone to sign a document and several things concerned him about that document #1 women had to be submissive to their husbands, #2 women cannot teach men, #3 women cannot be leaders in the church. The fundamentalist want to be male dominated, comparable to the Muslim way. So he started the new Baptist Covenant, less fundamentalism, more care.
Taking away the abortion and political issues and getting back to what Christians are suppose to be, caring and loving individuals. Helping the needy and so on and so forth. He was asked about the abortion topic and he stated that maybe if there weren’t so many homeless and needy then there might not be the need for abortions. Which I came to believe that if they can take care of the babies and provide for them, then abortion wouldn’t be in such a demand and an issue. The only set back I can see is Bill Clinton is involved in the grassroots of this movement and I sure hope he has asked forgiveness for his indiscretions. I will be researching this a little more, because it held my attention. Not Bill Clinton, but the movement.
John Hagee The Christian Zionist
This is a guy who feels we should protect Israel at all costs, he believes the Jewish religion and the Christian religion should mesh. After all Israel is God’s Holy place and it should be protected by all means, if it comes to war then the USA should move in to protect. The talk of dividing Jerusalem should not be taken any further according to him. He feels that if Iran get’s any hold on nukes that they will first attack Israel then the U.S. (after watching a GMA interview with the Iranian president and also the Muslim part of the documentary the night before I have to agree this guy is nuts) He is in Texas, other than the Falwell movement and the Carter movement, the rest of the people are in Texas, what a mix of Christian beliefs. He mixes Jewish religious practices with his Christian practices in one church. He had rocks and stones shipped over from Israel to build a prayer wall similar to the one found in Israel. He has a bible verse placed on it the quote Psalm 122:6 “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee” KJV. He has a book “Jerusalem Countdown” [by best-selling author John Hagee anticipates Israel’s strategies toward any Iranian threat and the resulting effect upon America. Can anyone actually believe that the Islamic fanatics presently in charge of the Iranian government would not use nuclear weapons on Israel, America and the world? ]
Newt Gringrich and the Christian Coalition
That’s all that needs to be said about that.
Greg Boyd
Now this guy right here, I liked. He argues from Scripture and history, that whenever the church gets too close to any political or national ideology, it is disastrous for the church and harmful to society. His book “The Cross and the Sword” I will probably look into. As a matter of fact I will do more research on all of the ideas and beliefs presented here along with their “following” and probably invest into their books just to weed out fact form fiction. Here is a link to his church’s statement of faith www.whchurch.org/content/page_6.htm. I made a note on my notes, of Christianity/Islam, and can’t remember why, oh well. I believe that it goes back to the idea that just as Islam wants to take over government and so is the Christian right. Both feeling that they, can control the country by implementing their beliefs on all citizens.
Ron Luce Teen Mania Ministries BattleCry
A stealthy enemy has infiltrated our country and is preying upon the hearts and minds of 33 million American teens. Corporations, media conglomerates, and purveyors of popular culture have spent billions to seduce and enslave our youth. So far, the enemy is winning. But there is plenty we can do. We need to take action. We need to answer the Battle Cry.
Last but not least Battlecry.com. Yes, I like it. It is geared toward children and teens.
Reminds me of a Holiness gathering but that’s ok to. Here is their statement of faith or Teen Bill of Rights: battlecry.com/teen_bor.php A really good statement and geared towards teens, starting with a head banging Christian rock concert and going forth. A very interesting site for kids to check out. I will be sending lilred there to browse. Another link Magnitude of the Crises battlecry.com/pages/magnitude.php
Points to Ponder:
They all have referred to our public school system as secular schools supported by tax dollars. If it were a public school then they could teach what they wanted, not what was mandated.
Our society, especially Western society, is geared more towards materialism instead of spiritualism. This was mentioned in the Muslim series and again in the Christian series. Our children know more about Paris Hilton than they do about their own religions and the Bible.
And for some reason I wrote look up Romans 1 and can’t remember why or who it pertained to.
That gluttony and greed are mentioned more times in the Bible as a no-no than homosexuality, but that these seem to be ignored or overlooked.
That Jesus was a peace loving man and lived in some of the worse political times there were and he did not advocate war. (I believe that this comes from Greg Boyd)
I sincerely hope that his little review motivates most of you to watch the series, especially the more Christian readers of this board. It gives pause to think and evaluate, to question and research. I have had to re-position some of my ideas and still stand firm in some of my ideas. But all in all it is a well completed documentary and should be viewed, it doesn’t learn one way or the other and presents a well rounded view of “God’s Warriors”. I don’t do the documentary thing and only planned on watching it briefly, I was surprised it held my interest.
