In case you haven't seen it, Gumbee posted this on the other site and bears repeating here, with a little clean up: ------------------ Think you are getting your money's worth? According to the NGN, the 2007-08 school budget is $37,330,031. There are 2600 students in the public school system (link 1) That's $14,358 per student. The best private schools in Georgia cost much less - including room and board! The average per student in Atlanta in 2005 was only $9,854 (thats $4,504 less than Blairsville and they have huge transportation, security and other administrative costs!) and in Valdosta (where the scores are among the best in the state) its only $7,200. Each classroom in a Union County School with 20 students costs taxpayers $287,160 for 9 months. "Screwed", is the most descriptive word I can use to express what's happing to the good people of Union County. There is a parable about it some where way back over on the Lamar Paris thread.
No body posted for days afterward. I guess they were shocked but, it is very descriptive of whats happening!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also posted on that other board:
Gumbee, You are now classified as one of those evil troublemakers for printing that. Welcome!
Gray Eagle, Yes, those comparisons may be slightly off, but not much. Further, I believe that the comparison to private school costs are more worthy of consideration. And by the way, I wouldn't call those figures impressive, but rather insulting and obscene. I and others did participate in the hearings regarding the last school millage rate increase. It mattered not what anyone said, this increase and many past increases are a done deal regardless due to the manner in which the School Board is elected and the Superintendent is employed.

That 2005 average was included for perspective.
And in all fairness, private schools charge less for elementary and more for high school. It makes a strong case for vouchers though dont it?

The public Schools would straighten their act up in a hurry -if- the school board had to give the dollars spent per child for education to the parents!
Parents could prove they were educating the children by submitting the child to state tests.
Yes it can be done! Yes it should be done! but-------------who will do it?

From Gumbee's post above...
For each classroom of 20 students it costs $287,160 for nine months .
Thats $31,906 per MONTH to support 20 students.
$31,906 to support just one room of 20 students each month! That's just astonishing.

Look at the Home page for this website down toward the bottom in the section for State of the High School. Click more and you can see the salaries for the school system administration.
