since the newspapers both have neglected to have a sample ballot for us to look at before we get in the booth I will type it out here for I don't have a scanner at this computer.
Yes or No
Should a special one percent sales and use tax for educational purposes be continued in Union County for a period not to succeed twenty (20) calender quarters beginning upon expiration of the sales and use tax for educational purposes now in effect, and for the purpose of raising not more than $27,000,000 of net proceeds by said tax, witch net proceeds shall go to the Union County School District for the purpose of (i) acquiring, constructing and equipping new schools and facilities, including a new fine arts facility, new high school athletic facilities, new class room additions, and a new gymnasium at Woody Gap School, (ii) adding to, adding to renovating, repairing, improving, and equipping existing school buildings and school system facilities, (iii) acquiring miscellaneous new equipment, fixtures, fixtures and furnishings for the school system, including including instructional and administrative technology and safety and security equipment. (iv)Acquiring school busses vehicles and transportation and maintenance equipment, (v) acquiring textbooks and other instructional materials, (vi) acquiring land for new or existing schools, with the maximum cost of the projects in items (i) - (vi) payable from the said tax being $27,000,000, (vii) paying any general obligation debt of the school district in conjunction with the imposition of such sales and use tax, and (viii) paying the expenses incident to accomplishing the fore going.
If the imposition of the tax is approved by the voters, such vote shall also constitute approval of the insurance of general obligation debt of union County school district in the principal amount of $20,000,000 for the purposes of the Union County School District described in items (i)- (vi) and (viii) above for the purpose of payment of a portion of the payment of such debt.
Understand all that?
Lets list all the things they are going to spend it for!
1. Acquiring constructing new schools and facilities
2. New fine arts center
3. New high school athletic facilities
4. New class Room Additions
5. New Gymnasium at Woody Gap
6. Adding to, renovating, repairing, improving, equipping building and system facilities.
7. Buying miscellaneous new equipment for the school system
8. Fixtures and furnishings
9. Instructional and administrative technology equipment
10. Safety and security equipment
11. School buses
12. Vehicles, transportation and maintenance equipment
13. Textbooks
14. Instructional materials
15. Land
16. paying off debt of previous sploch where it didn't come up to their predictions
17. Paying off interest if they don't meet the expectations this time also.
18. And the last paragraph allows them to put us in debt , right away,$20,000,000 (with the interest payments that go with th loan.
Usually a elost project is asked for a specific project like a new school building, or even a fine arts center but this mis-mash of items listed on this ballot looks like they have asked and covered just about every thing but salaries. I have a sneaking suspicion that if this passes we are going to see a huge increase in salaries, when they are already out of line.
