My property taxes aren't bad, I can live with it eliminating my property tax wouldn't help without the school tax being lowered. My school taxes are 2/3's of my tax bill.. that's excessive. I want quality education for our children but come on the numbers don't add up!!
I look at the school board most of these people are developers and businessmen I have a problem with that as does most of the people I talk to. How can we get better control of our school system when the people in charge of our school's have their own agenda in front of the best interest of the citizens of this county?
Another problem I have is excessive permit's... you have to buy a permit to set a propane tank, to remodel, to build a porch, deck or any addition or new structure on YOUR OWN property, to set a garage up from home depot.. and on and on and on .. who gets all this permit money and what do they do with it?
The phantom won't talk to me because I said he was silly do any of you intelligent people have my answers?.... P.S. SORRY PHANTOM, I MEANT THE NAME NOT THE IDEA'S BEHIND THE NAME WAS SILLY I TOTALLY AGREE WITH REPLY #7 IN YOUR LINK!!

Pugs, you hit on two very real problems. You are right on about the school board, there is only one way to change that and that is by voting them all out of office. Which will be hard to do since "the powers that be" want them to stay. It will take a true grassroots effort to make a change in the power structure. You know why there are so many permits required don't you? It's so that if you make ANY improvements to your property which might increase the value the taxes will rise appropriately. If we have to get permits to do improvements then it just means that we are having to do the board of assessors job for them, their job is to look at property and see if they think the value has risen. The last time the county reasessed all the property the board of assessors couldn't do the job themselves, instead the beloved commissioner spent a big chunk of our tax money to hire an outside firm to do it for them. I have been told that the firm that was paid such a big amount of money was provided with county vehicles to ride around in and reassess our property. I don't think that I need to even tell you what my solution is to solve the "permit" problem!

Your right short.... but where does the permit money go?
I don't have a problem with building new schools to house the children in I don't want them to have to use trailers however what does the school do with all their money from the property taxes? I'm sure the teachers and workers that deserve more money didn't get it !! I bet every person in this county looked at the school portion of their property taxes and gritted their teeth... The board needs to get control of their money pit or retire from their post allow someone to step in and clean up their mess, because they aren't doing their job worth a dime!!

Pugs-- once discipline is applied to any elected county official, the rest come into line and start doing right. The chosen one for discipline is Lie more. Send him home or send him to jail

THIS IS NOT THE LAMAR THREAD THIS IS THE TAX THREAD IF I WANTED TO WHINE ABOUT LAMAR I WOULD BE IN THE LAMAR THREAD IF YOU WANT TO WHINE ABOUT LAMAR GO TO THE LAMAR THREAD.
Now that's settled... where does all the permit money go short, who gets it and for what? Also since the splost pays for buildings, books, buses etc like Eddie said in the splost thread what does the huge 2/3 % of my property taxes pay for?

That's just fine guys if you want to hash over old screw ups that we can't do anything about other than vote in another commissioner "KNOCK YOURSELF OUT!!"
I'm not willing to vote for any Tom Dick or Harry that steps up to the plate with a different name than Lamar just because he's not Lamar..
The phantom has some really good ideas to promote our county, he has ideas to curb spending in every department while keeping taxes lower we have the opportunity to ask legitimate questions on key issues instead of bashing our current commissioner we should be comparing the two candidates answers to our questions .
I admit, I like Lamar on some issues but the phantom is gaining ground for me I printed some of his Q&A to show my little group of friends and family and they feel the same as I do he has some really good ideas!!

Also since the splost pays for buildings, books, buses etc like Eddie said in the splost thread what does the huge 2/3 % of my property taxes pay for? Calm down Pugs. You must agree that when you ask about permit fees, you brought Lamar into this. But permit fees are only a drop in the bucket in the overall picture. Yes, I agree that the extensive permit situation is out of hand. Not only does this put more money in the till, but also raises a red flag (that you pay for) to alert the tax office to raise assessments again. That same red flag also brings in control as to who can and who cannot do something. And don't think for a minute that all people are treated the same. With current real estate values in the tank now, you don't hear any talk from the courthouse about another County wide re-assessment to lower values do you? But to address your question as to where all the money goes. If you were to look at a list of names of County and School employees, you would see that much of the money is spent on relatives and supporters of those in power, a job program for votes if you will. You would also be surprised at the salaries and the number of seemingly unnecessary assistants. But most importantly, we will never, never know where the money goes until those in charge are gone and are replaced with honest upfront individuals that will intall policies that provide accountability and transparency in school budgets as well as county budgets.

Does the commissioner have any control over the spending, salaries etc... or our school system?
Who does our superintendent answer to?

One more thing Pugs, and everyone else, this is important to consider. How can you possibly hire the most qualified person for a particular position when you only look as far as relatives and supporters. Anything less than hiring or appointing the most qualified people can only lead to mediocrity, inefficiency and waste. There goes more of our money.
