I'm a little miffed and confused by this thread. I've lived here for quite awhile now, and even know a lot of people here. Can I post here when "natives" decide to post? I've never been one to discriminate against anyone & I don't like labels. To me, being called a "native" is being labeled.

I'm not a native, but have lived here most of my life. My parents were born and raised here then moved to Atlanta, where I was born.

No Tinky; I do have Native American in my blood. Very far down the line; not enough to sign on a dotted line for.
Summer; That's native enough, dont you believe? I do!

My maternal g- grandmother was Cherokee and my paternal gr-gr-gr grandmother was full Creek.
My husband says that is why I stay on the war path all the time.

I am not a native to the area either but I feel at home and welcome. I grew up in South Georgia, moved to the metro Atlanta area later in life where I raised my children, then decided to retire in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains.

I wouldn't have it any other way. I have time to spend with my lovely bride and time to spend with the grandkids too. Retirement in the mountains was always my dream. When the grandkids get older I may move to a little island far, far away and spend my remaining days there.

I am familiar to the terms of Not a Native.. and more.. however I also know that from my life being lived here.. its about what you make of it when you get here.. You dont walk into a family and expect a person to act like they never had one.. and though some locals can be intimidating, they may have been bitten a time or two.. once bitten twice shy syndrom.,.. and I am VERY SORRY that these situations have made people be a lil extreme with cautionous behavior to those who have never meant harm and want acceptance.. Truly I am.. Ive seen this kinda thing my whole life..
I have life long friendships here.. and family.. and I have friends who Ive been blessed with having chosen the same area that I love too! I do welcome folks..
A while back, one of my dearest friends was telling me how she was treated when she first came here.. she tried to be a part of friendships and she was shunned by some locals.. that broke my heart.. and I couldnt help but think to myself.. those shunners dont know what they missed out on cause this girl is over the top and I love her.. she can bring smiles daily my way and bring to light some of lifes mysterys that I was uneducated on.. and a wink along with that.. and she knows what the wink is.. a wink from God for sure.. Ive often times been odd girl out.. and sat on a bench.. wondering why this person didnt wanna be my friend.. and learned.. that sometimes... just sometimes.. it aint about me.. its about their personal issues that they will have to deal with.. and sometimes.. its something I need to change or at least come to understand too.. Sometimes its just for the best that we agree to disagree and march on.. but Im glad that Ive made the friends who have moved here and I consider locals.. you are local to me.. and when you have a local physical address.. and phone number.. well.. I cant see how you arent local.. now when I have to dial 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx... ya just aint made it here yet.lol
So, my responce to the LOCAL thing.. youre as local as you wanna be.. even what others call locals... have to learn to take the bitter with the sweet..

I have lived here most all of my life and I hate the cliquey thing, you would think people would have outgrown that when they graduated from high school. But as adults, they are still like that. People I went to school with will leave church on Sunday and wouldn't speak to me if they had to. So I just be a pregnant dog and say "Hey, how ya doing?" and they have to respond.
I don't like the term native or them and us and the other derogatory terms used. I like people based on themselves. It doesn't matter if you came from Blairsville or Mars. OK, I take that back, if you came from MARS I would definately be suspicious of you. But if you were nice to me then I will be nice to you.
