What I want to know is "If it was so great why did you leave?"
No one can answer that.
Plus another reason folks are rushing to get here, race issues.
There, I said it, the cat is out of the bag.

Those of us who can enjoy what we have and make a living from what we can, learning to make do or do without, we will be the ones the others are depending on to teach them how.
An old motto my kid's have heard for years:
Use it up Wear it out Make it do Or do without.

I am one of those rare native Floridians. Years ago, it was slower paced and more "southern." Then there was an influx of people from all over, who did what some transplants are doing here...they wanted to make things like where ever they came from. I moved to Wisconsin for 15 years and always hated the weather and knew I would go back to Florida eventually. I moved back in 1984, but it never felt like my "home." The rat race, the crime and the crowds really made it a place where I didn't want to live! Top that with an endless summer and then hurricanes, taxes and insurance. I can't blame anyone for wanting to leave Florida! But there are a few things that were nice... and a few things that could be missed! QB, there are friendly people from everywhere... just as there are rude abnoxious people! Just because someone misses a certain aspect of their old life does not mean they want everything changed so it is like it used to be. Plus, a little change is not always a bad thing. Some parts of Union County did not get electricity or phones until the 50's, way past when most of the country was already enjoying those "luxuries." I am sure no one would want to go back to those "good old days" for more than a few days/weeks when they were camping in the rough. Yes, there are some transplants that think they are better than others, just like there are some "locals" who think they are better than everyone else. But not everyone is that way, thank goodness!

I agree bb, there are bad folks everywhere and they get out of life what they put into it. I just don't want those bad folks around me, native or not.
My friends from Florida are nice, they are different and enjoy some things that I don't, but we all get along just fine.
Electricity is one thing, Wal-Mart and more restaurants I don't think we need. Everyone who moves here is use to everything being convient to them. Stores open 24 hours, big box discount places just 2-3 miles down the road. Blairsville doesn't have that and we don't need it.
People move here because it's laid back and easy going. Then they realize that they have to drive 23 miles to get alcohol or 25 miles to shop at Wal-Mart or 2 hours to the Mall of Georgia, etc. Then they decide, well we need to build those stores here so they don't have to drive as far. Pretty soon, we are a suburb of Atlanta and a city with issues like they have in Florida.
The very reason they left. And then brought it with them.
This is what I attribute the house for sale signs to. Most of the houses have not been lived in very long because people build them, relaize they miss those easy to reach shopping centers and social clubs and head right back to where ever they moved from.
Sorry but if we never built another new business it would be fine with me.

I like Blairsville as it is too and don't want Lamar attracting a bunch of new businesses with his $31 million splost. Fortunately I don't think it would work anyway.

It won't attract any new businesses. He said that it will provide jobs and he is right there, but those jobs will be for his developer and builder friends.

Coosa they are talking about building large businesses and personal friends receiving favors. I don't think it is directed at builders in general.

WOM if you moved here because you love the simple way of life the laid back attitude of the residents, the mountains and you want to be just like us ... welcome.. if you have decided it's to laid back and boring, you don't like the people there's no place to shop or eat, you feel you have to save us from our ignorance, your not going to fit in and feel welcome we are very protective of our own whether they are family or we have adopted them as part of our family... attitude goes a long way up here! I'm describing being robbed. Your saying that its okay to rob folks if they don't try and pretend to be "local" ? The attitude of being protective of your own criminals is a common attitude. I say the local thieves are lucky to still be alive.

No WOM what I said was this "The only thing in life we have control of is our happiness, life is short and time is precious if your unhappy living in your situation you sir are the only one with the power to change your circumstances and situation don't blame everyone else for your own misery pick yourself up stop feeling sorry for yourself and take control of your life, stop blaming everyone in the community for the deeds of a few bad apples and if someone robs you kick their a$$ I would. You have no idea what you're talking about. But I'll make you a promise. When the "community" applies appropriate justice to those "few bad apples" then I won't have to anymore.
