I AM LAMAR. There I have come out of the closet. I AM ALSO NORMAN, flinging the closet door wide open. MANAPE IS THE FATHER OF ANNA NICOLE'S BABY, cause she's gonna be a rich little girl. I KNOW WHO WAS ON THE GRASSY KNOLL, and I ain't telling. WOW! I feel better already, confession is good for the soul. Are you sure about that? I heard that Lamar was the baby's father! ;D

In an article in the Cherokee Scout, "County commission's actions disreputable", March 21, 2007, Barry L. Watson states, "Three commissioners just doesn't work. We need at least five or maybe seven." Does anyone understand why it is necessary to have 7 commissioners for a small county like Cherokee County NC?

Manape, there are a lot of "happenings" that some call unfair, unjustifying, actually there has always been talk of Cherokee County, Nc. HOWEVER, unlike Union County.. with Blairsville and Suches being UNION.. One in which is unincorp. Cherokee has Andrews, Murphy, and best I recall, Topton and Hiawassee Dam.. therefor their county government is more demanding I think?? or is it? Thats just what I thought of anyways.. but along with all of the mischief and such about political figures.. that seem to be in the pot to stir just as much there as the ones here.. I would just be guessing on any of that???

I'm sorry to put something serious in here, but I'm really trying to understand how many commissioners would be needed in our county and where do you stop?
May poor Anna Nicole rest in peace and I hope her baby just has a good home.

Fairydust. Each county is unique...that's for sure and they can get into some real knock down drag outs. Every time I'm in Murphy, I look on the front page of their newspaper boxes. Seems like there is always something going on. Topton could come into the mix. They also have Martins Creek. It seems like the magic number would be 5. I'm just not sure why they would need seven. Come to think or it, there is Peachtree. So, Murphy city, H-Dam, Martins Creek, Andrews, Topton, Peachtree, and Hanging Dog. That's seven. OK I get it. I was thinking it was some kind of 3, 5, 7 prime number mathmatical relationship but I guess it is more of a geographical relationship. What a day! Good night.

I am being serious as well.. I think it is to many to ask for 7... but I also think that if you look at the North Carolina Court Calendars online, that you will see that the court calendars are filled to the hilt and I am wondering myself, just how long it takes to hear one case.. My thoughts are, the county is over extended by far with the towns inwhich the county governs. I would more see Cherokee County having multi commissioners compared to our county. As our county grows, so do demands.. people move here from other countys and I do not believe that they mean to change everything for us.. they have just seen what works for them.. On the same token tho.. we are still considered a small town at this point regardless. Our businesses I do not believe have grown considering the volume of people who retire or move here. Manape, I do believe you too have grown up here? Maybe? IF so.. look in your school yearbooks.. and tell me if I am wrong when I say that there were more businesses in operations in the 80s? Umm.. at least who advertised in the yearbooks in the 80s.. So my personal opinion is seriously open to reading yalls because I am at the debating on wether we truthfully are ready to pay for a full board of commissioners or not when we have way more residents than businesses can serve to and not only that.. even tho people are thinking more abroad of what they have dealt with in having multi commisioners before moving to a county that still has just one.. you cant put Blairsville in the same markets as huge or even bigger countys that most do move here from.. to find serenity and small town values.. its being open minded to want this.. and NO I DO NOT THINK IT IS FAIR THAT ONE MAN CAN SPEAK FOR THE WHOLE COUNTY AND REJECT OR APPROVE things that we should be able to decide.. I read somewhere, here or there that there has been decisions unfairly made and on bias.. and I dont think that is right.. but I do not know of one person who has not done this in office or out of office either... I like Lamar. I am NOT here to bash him either. I think he has had better intentions than he is given credit for however I do not agree with every thing he has done.. I agree that he has done the best that anyone else woulda done.. and he has done many things fairly too. Meeks Park is nice.. but I would like to see it more inviting for more than ball games.. the nature path is great.. however when I look at other parks that have kiddie parks within, I see more than what we have going for little ones.. put some swings in and make it a tad bit bigger and you have me on the Meeks Park but right now, when I go, I see ball teams and elderlys enjoying the park moreso than just families going for family fun and enjoyment? Not that I am against elderlys having enjoyment either cause I LOVE elderlys very much and probably have more of them in my life than younger generations.. but I know that the park would be more inviting with a better playground and family atmosphere theme of something. As many kids that are in school, specially just the primary and elem., it would get more use for sure. The Skate park was a nice idea for the pre teens and teens however, there has been a lot of disrespect and misuse as well.. but that was a good thing for the kids and it is used at least. I love the pool. It is great. All of the extra activities that are offered now by the rec dept. like dances and such are awesome too! IS POTEETE CREEK County ran or State? Ok.. anyways, Manape.. I too hope that Nicoles baby has a good upbringing and life ahead under the circumstances of being without its mother. I actually quit even reading the other thread elsewhere because the whole thing had gone crazy and the media has not helped let Anna Nicole rest in peace so strike at my prior comment and my apologies to all on that one.

I grew up here and I don't want to go back to the flat lands if I can help it. Yes, there was Boot Hill and a bunch of dress factories, but all that is in Mexico, now. Those types of businesses will never return. You can pay 75 cents an hour in Mexico. Just visit one of the border towns in Mexico and you will see why. When something breaks they don't have the money to fix it. If someone is speeding down a dirt road, they just dig a trench for a speed bump. Public transportation is usually a old broken down school bus from the US. In some towns they don't have traffic lights and they don't even bother to stop at an intersection. Don't drink the water or drive in Mexico. Anyway, that's why they risk their lives to come to the US. If I had waited to retire when I moved back to Union County, I couldn't afford the modest house I'm living in now. I'm just wondering if I will ever afford to retire and live above the poverty level. I hate the drug problems we are experiencing every where. It is sad to think that a young person's life can be snuffed out at such an early age. If you Read VIEW FROM THE PORCH forum you will see examples of groups of people taking action. What I want to see is ideas for action, not just complaints. Public officials work for us. Ideas like multi-commissioners and antiquated 1952 tax laws don't address the problems we have right now. I'm concerned how the money is spent, but I also concerned that the people have to pay all the taxes. Wouldn't make a lot of sense to bring businesses in to offset the tax burden. If a resort is not the type of businesses we need, then what kind of businesses do we need? I don't have the answers. I just want to hear your thoughts. Yes, Tom Murphy is primarily the one person responsible for getting new business in Union County, including a new resort, but no one accused him of lying. Those who wrote THE SCARLET LETTER just wanted to pin it on Lamar. Your logic is flawed. Don't you think the rational voters can see right through you? How stupid do you think we are? We need businesses that would not impact our environment significantly, not cause us more problems related to drugs, and preserve the beauty of the mountains, but what type of businesses do we need to attract so young people can stay in the county and not have to move out, as I had to do? We are rich in recreation in Union County. I love to hike the AT and the blue trails. I love the water falls like Helton creek. I love the trout streams. And I love what ALL the Commissioners have done to contribute to county recreation. POTEETE CREEK is run by the County, but locals can't camp there unless they make reservations way ahead of time. Most of the campers live there for 8 or 9 months out of the year. It is a frugal way for them to live here. However, locals can use the free boat ramp and hang out there. You can find out a lot about the county by visiting their website at www.unioncountyga.gov/For those who don't like golf the county is searching for new programs: The Union County Parks and Recreation Department is searching for new programs to offer to the community. For example: Art / Photograph classes ~ Guitar lessons ~ Bird watching Skateboard lessons ~ Low impact Aerobics ~ Craft camps ~ Dance classes In order to make these new programs work the recreation department is in search of people with the skills to teach these classes, and lessons. If you are interested in assisting us with any of these programs please call Brad Ballard at (706) 439-6074. Poteete Creek Recreation Area - Campground |Meeks Park| |Spring| |Fall -Winter Sports|

POTEETE CREEK IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR ME!!!
All of the sites along the lake are taken by seasoners who pay in advanced. The rest of us ar stuck in the woods.
According to the people who run the campground Lamar said "if it weren't for the season campers they would have to close Poteete Creek Campground." Not enough money
I was really upset when we tried to make reservations and told we can't cause "that site has been reserved for the summer" I am sure my tax dollars are involved in the upkeep.
Several county employees have reserve for several months in advance. I had a whole letter to the editor typed out on this and never mailed it, may have to re-visit that idea.
This is a real sore spot for me.

Lamar runs meeks park and golf course together in audit . Paris has been advised by auditors for several years to stop this practice . He also uses tax money to build roads to his friends developements ;i.e. barns creek road ; built with our money before he took road into county system . Developers are supposed to build their own roads to county specs .

But of course Lamar will lie out and probably change the records ; which should get him 2 years but probably wont because of his control in courthouse . Stopping this type of stealing would save tax money .

I'm sorry. I just don't see the connection here...Lamar has "control of the courthouse" That sounds absurb to me. It says "Union County Courthouse" the last time I checked; not "The Commissioner's Palace." Enlighten me. How does he control the courthouse? I'm not sure I follow you on this one. There is a difference between building a road within the development and building a road to his friends developments. The developers are responsible for building roads within specifications within their property. The county should not pay for building a road within the development. If it conforms to specifications, the county can take over and maintain the road within the development after it is build and paid for by the developer.
However you said, "He also uses tax money to build roads to his friends developements. Roads to a development should be build with county money.

HB.
I don't think it is fair for people from out side the county to rent Poteetes for the whole summer, either. Perhaps some of the spaces you are talking about should have a time limit so people including local residents could reserve them for a week at a time. It seems like there should be a compromise so summer gypsies couldn't hog the park.

The dictator himself said he controls the county . He controls our money and budgets the allowances for the court house offices . It is against Ga. law for a county to build roads on private property .
