M4M LOL
M4M, I'll be good. I guess I missed the part you are talking about. Thanks for bringing levity to this forum.
Sometimeman
I'm not sure I follow your thinking. Should the commissioner not spend any money? How should he spend it? Should he just spend it on roads? How would you run the county?
Welcome back Sonny. I missed you. I'll read your dissertation on sole commissioner later. I just skimmed it. I gotta get back to paying the bills.

I've never been to one of those meetings in my life. If you saw "another" manape there, go to home.clara.net/rfthomas/news/talesofbf.html and report your sighting.

M4M Warning: This thread contains nudity. I hate it when you get confused...just so you won't get contused again: I was googling through some old photos and found this one. Please don't let small children see this photo and I hope it doesn't offend anyone. Click the URL below to see a moon shot: home.clara.net/rfthomas/bf_images/f72.jpg

Oops! jeez. M4M, now you got me to doing it. I used the word contused. I meant confused.
I would never harm you by contusing you: contuse: To injure without breaking the skin; bruise. Manapes are gentle creatures. We are not like we are depicted in the movies at all. We just try to scare people.

THE POWER OF QUESTIONS
Einstein once remarked that if he were about to be killed and had only 1 hour to figure out how to save his life, he would devote the first 55 minutes of that hour to searching for the RIGHT QUESTION. Once he had that question. Einstein said, finding the answer would take about 5 minutes. (The Einstein Factor, A Proven New Method for Increasing Your Intelligence, Win Wenger, Ph. D. and Richard Poe, page 135)
When Bebe Heiskell, the Sole Commissioner of Walker County, ran her campaign, one part of her platform was Integrity in Government. A person who acts with integrity acts in accordance with a personal code of principles--integrity is one of the cornerstones of ethical behavior.
Fairplay's idea is to create a 5 person-board of commissioners. My question is what problem would this solve?
One approach to acting with integrity is to extend to all people the same respect and consideration that you desire. During the last "Lamar Lied" smear campaign, Lamar Paris has acted with integrity, as I understand the meaning of the word. He answered the "did Lamar lie question" with dignity and respect. I think he is a man of integrity.
An other part of Bebe's strategy is community participation. I think this forum is a way for the community to participate in government. Ask the right questions!
Hi Ho! Hi Ho! Off to work I go. I owe. I owe.

“My question is What problem would this solve?”
Where do you want me to start? First of all if a 5 member board were to be set up like the Nancy Shafer bill for Towns County it would be cheaper on the taxpayer. (5/10/05 Senate Bill 137) You don’t pay part time commissioners by the same rate we are now compensating a sole commissioner, expense account, new vehicles and who knows what else. They would hire a professional County Manager that surely would not be a land developer and the suspicion that brings to the office. This bomb that was dropped on the people of Union County that our vote was a waste of time and money would have been avoided for it would have been discussed in an open forum. That project has been known about for a long time. You don’t acquire 1400 acres in a community like this without the word getting out to the select. I had my suspicions when Lamar started setting up the public, (several years ago) warning us that the county was going to have to pay big money to re design the exit ramp at Lows Mill Road. He said it was necessary because the cement trucks created a hazard. Even as far out of the loop as I am I knew there was at least 500 acres back in that area that 2 members on the Development Authority gave each other as “Gifts of deed,” have long been planed for a golf course. It wouldn’t be the first time the county created a curb cut for a single business and the taxpayer footed the bill. Some say they never get anything done because they are always bickering back and forth. I say great! We need to discuss things of the importance of a project like that coming into our area. I call it checks and balances. Do we need all that extra business that a resort of that caliber brings to the area? I personally long for the pre stop light time. It was what attracted me here 30 years ago and it’s a shame, but we have lost our quaintness. Our taxes are becoming out of reach, for the locals and the poor retirees, and if this development becomes like the Reynolds project then the locals and the poor retirees will soon become extinct. May be that’s what they are planning. People of that caliber aren’t worried about high taxes. I’m sure the land speculators are eager for it to come and “why not” they will make money hand over fist but at what cost to the community? I think the most important thing that having 5 commissioners restores to our local government is returning our Legislative branch to the people, as guaranteed in the US Constitution and the Georgia Constitution. Our Legislative branch was designed to make the laws, create boards and etc. representing the wishes of the people. It was never planed for one person to do what he wants without the advice of the people.

Fairplay you are right. How many people can afford to be a full time commissioner? If Lamar is willing to let the new resort sell liquor by the drink along with beer and wine why doesn't he allow businesses in the county to sell at least beer and wine? He will not even have to make a resolution to do so. If you all have read the view point in the NGN, it appears the Norman or Lamar is reading this web page and Norman is up to his old self in writing view points to himself. We have them both worried about a multi-commisssion. Let's keep it up.

Sonny. You have really LOST me here. 1. A 5-member board of commissioners plus a county manager cost less than one commissioner??? 2. OK, Lamar is / was a land developer. Is that against the law? What crime has he committed? 3. Beer and wine were voted down. I voted NO. The people asked for a vote. We voted. 4. Then you jumped to an exit ramp on Lows Mill Road. Hugh??? 5. You want to elect five fools who sit around and argue and don't spend money and don't get any thing done. That sure sounds like our government at work. That's checks and balances? Where did you go to school? 6. Sonny, you ramble and ramble. It is no wonder not many people outside your own little group listen to you. I'm sorry. You sound like a smart man and a good man. I just don't understand you. I'm really not against a 5-member board + a county manager. I agree any commissioner needs help. He needs people who are part of the solution, not the problem.I had rather see one commissioner who promotes - integrity in government
- balanced growth
- government costs containment
- a county recreation program
- development of tourism, industry, and business
- county participation
- historic preservation
- roads
than five who are paid nothing to do nothing.

My 2 cents-- Ape-baby wants to spend other peoples money. He knows you don't have to have itegrity, you only have to talk about it and say you do.
The best Sonny or any of us could hope for is to have laws inforced that control the people we elect to hold public office. Specifically 36-1-6 and 45-11-1
Lamar has an answer for his position on everything, an example is the alcohol sales thing. There is such a thing as self evident truth. Lamar lied that is self evident. Five Commissioners will do a better job for Union County than a sole commissioner form of government. If you can't believe that then you should believe it.
