I saw where one builder had several spec homes for sale in the paper. He also had about 12 lots for sale, so he is not planning to build on them, I am guessing. There are still a bunch of foreclosures in the paper every week.

Foreclosures are sad, and I feel sorry for families who are losing their homes due to the economy. You work your whole life and sink money into a nice home then POOF! it's gone.
That's why I live in a trailer. It's paid for and it's mine. The land is where the value the homes are eventually replaced.

I think a home and security is more important to a woman. I bought my first house when I was 21. All I ever wanted to do was pay it off, so I saved and saved. It was paid for when I was 32. I have never had a mortgage since! I might starve to death, but I will always have a place to live! My mama taught me to pay bills before buying any food. That is how I was raised .

Her house was always paid for too!! Steak was my favorite food ($1 a pound back then) On the rare occasion we had steak, we had only one! She cut the meat off the bone for me, and she chewed on the bone. We were really poor but it really taught me the value of money.

I don't think there is anything wrong giving people a few bucks to someone, even if they buy booze. Sometimes I do give...sometimes I don't. As a Christian, I think it is good to ask God to send someone to you, so you can "witness" to them. It doesn't matter to me if they are beggars or not. I know this is a strange concept to those who only consider church as a place you go to to be bored to tears on Sunday. Of course, you don't want to put yourself in harm's way. So, you do have to be careful even here in the hills.
It is good thing to save money when times are good to survive on when times are bad.
Also, if someone doesn't have a job, take advantage of unemployment services like job clubs, church help, schooling, and networking groups.
Personally, I find it more practical to pound the streets looking for a job than having my kids hold a "WILL WORK FOR FOOD" sign. Besides my kids wouldn't stand for it. The first time I was unemployed, the best advice I got was from my kid who said...oh, you will find another one. That's when I started practicing what I preached. She was right. I found some pretty crummy low paying jobs, but eventually I found one making more money. Take it or leave it. Just a little manape advice.

That's right, coosa... I have done lots of jobs, factory work, waitressing, bartending, cashier. Some have been physically difficult, some have been mentally challenging/stressful. At one point, I had three jobs to make ends meet!

I have also worked 3 jobs before, as a single mom supporting a son and paying a divorce lawyer.
Through the week I was a receptionist and assistant at a dental office, evenings I made sandwiches at Subway and weekends worked at a convenience store.
You do what you have to do to survive.
